National Tree Day is almost here, and Central West Lachlan Landcare is once again partnering with Forbes and Parkes Shire Councils to bring local communities together for a weekend of tree planting and environmental action.

This year marks 30 years of National Tree Day.

Since the first event was organised by Planet Ark in 1996, millions of Australians have rolled up their sleeves to improve the environment, support native wildlife and make their communities greener places to live.

Final preparations have been underway at both planting sites, and registrations remain open.

Registering helps organisers keep participants informed of any updates and ensures there is enough catering and equipment available on the day.

In Forbes, we'll be working with Forbes Shire Council on Saturday, 25 July, planting out a section of the Forbes Cemetery.

Species planted will include Grey Box and Black Wattle, two native species that play an important role in supporting local biodiversity.

Black Wattle is a fast-growing species that helps with early screening and site establishment while providing habitat value, including flowers that attract insects and birds.

Grey Box offers excellent long-term shade and canopy cover and is also well known for supporting a variety of native wildlife.

There is also an interesting piece of local history connected to this year's planting site.

The Forbes Cemetery is home to the grave of infamous Australian bushranger Ben Hall, who was shot dead by police in May 1865.

Hall is buried in a heritage-listed gravesite marked by a prominent headstone and protective fence.

In Parkes, we'll be returning to the soon-to-be-opened wetlands on Akuna Road for planting on Sunday, 26 July.

Numerous National Tree Day events have been held in and around this area over the past decade, and it's rewarding to see earlier plantings now thriving.

This year's planting will complement the naturally occurring River Red Gum and Fuzzy Box vegetation communities found nearby.

National Tree Day provides a fantastic opportunity to get outdoors, meet new people and make a positive contribution to the local environment.

Whether you're planting your first tree or returning as a seasoned volunteer, every tree and shrub planted helps create habitat for native wildlife and strengthens our local landscapes for future generations.

Since the program began, more than 28 million trees, shrubs and grasses have been planted across Australia as part of National Tree Day.

It's a reminder of what communities can achieve when they come together with a shared purpose.

Forbes National Tree Day will be held on Saturday, 25 July from 10am at Forbes Cemetery.

Parkes National Tree Day will be held on Sunday, 26 July from 10am at Akuna Road.
