The CSIRO Parkes radio telescope, Murriyang, or the 'Dish' as it is often known as have extended their operating hours during the school holidays and are open daily from 8.30am to 5.00pm and there is lots to see and do there.
While at the "Dish" you can take the time to explore everything astronomical, take in the wonderful space science exhibition which takes you on a journey exploring the highlights of the telescope's rich history.
The exhibition will also have you pondering some of the big questions like 'How big is the Universe?' and 'What is the Universe made of?'.
Entry into the Visitors Centre is free.
While exploring the Dish, you can challenge your kids with the AstroKids Scavenger Hunt.
This fun activity takes you on a tour around the Visitors Centre looking for clues to solve a puzzle. Once you have unveiled the secret word you can then collect the official AstroKids stamp. The activity is suitable for students 7-14 years of age and takes about 30 minutes to complete.
You can complete the Scavenger Hunt at any time for $4.95.
The Visitors Centre also gives visitors the chance to discover the universe in its high-definition 3D theatre which shows for approximately 30 minutes. Our 3D theatre is on offer every day for $9.50 for adults, $8 seniors/students, or $35 family (2 adults, 2 or more children).
It has several features - 'Expedition Earth', 'Beyond the Barrier' and 'Bigger than Big'.
As a special holiday program, in the second week of the school holidays there will also be "daily Astronomy Talks from Monday the 2nd of October through to Friday 6th October.
At 11am, visitors will be able to hear about the amazing science happening right now at the CSIRO's Parkes Radio Telescope so save those space and science questions for then.
Entry to the daily "talks" is $5 per person.
The Dish Café will also be open every day in the school holidays from 10am to 3pm.
