BOWLS
PARKES MEN'S BOWLS
On Thursday 17th September 22 players attended to play social bowls. On rink 9 Tom Furey and Colin Miller 15 shots prevailed over opponents Ray Jones and Colin Mudie 13 shots. Colin and Ray scored a 3 on the 10th end but in a low scoring game were only just behind.
On rink 10 in another close encounter Ron Hornery and Colin Hayward 22 shots just edged out Ian Simpson and Warren Bevan 21. On rink 11 another close game was finally won by Bruce Deland and John Corccoran 21 shots to Tony Riordan and Rob Tinkers 18 shots. On rink 12 Gary McPhee and visiting railway diggers bowler Keven Hyndes 17 shots had no answer to the dominant bowling display of John Wright and Rob Irving 31 shots. After scoring a 3 on the 6th end Rob and John followed up with a 6 on the 7th end. Not to be outdone and show a bit of fight Keven and Gary returned the favour with a 6 on the 8th end but it was all too late and they were chasing all the way in this match to try to obtain a respectable outcome.
On rink 13 in another lopsided game the triples combination of Mal Porter, Steve Ryan and Arthur Corbett 23 shots easily accounted for Gordon Dickson, John Carr and John Ward 11 shots. Whilst Arthur was well supported by his 2 players he was on fire and showed no mercy with some fine draw shots.
On Saturday 19th September 20 players attended to play in conditions which tested most players with the strong winds encountered throughout the afternoon.
On rink 9 newcomer Peter Durkin and Gary McPhee 17 shots were just edged out by Bob Freeman and Martin Tighe 18 shots. Bob made a good contribution and Martin showed the results of all the practise he has undertaken lately to dead draw a few shots and always have something in the head. Well done Martin your efforts are paying off.
On rink 11 Greg Huggins after a fair layoff owing to knee surgery and Steve Ryan 21 shots prevailed against the strong pairing of Heather Harvey and Colin Miller 14 shots. It is good to see Heather who is now the ladies bowls secretary competing with the men and improving at a rapid rate. Steve and Greg kicked off with a 3 on the 1st and 7th end and a 4 on the 11th end and a 3 on the 17th end. In comparison Colin and Heather struggled but never gave up.
On rink 12 in another convincing win Mal Porter and John Ward 28 shots were never threatened by Graeme Hunter and John Carr 10 shots. John and Mal scored a couple of 5's on the way to their victory.
On rink 13 Trevor Harvey and the ever reliable Colin Mudie 27 shots accounted for Ron Hornery and Col Hayward 18 shots.
On rink 14 on a day of a number of convincing wins Ray Jones and John Dunn 27 shots were too good for John Wright and Ian Simpson 13 shots. John and Ian struck a drought at the 2nd end and never scored again until the 9th end.
The game was well and truly over by then but they did score a few more shots before the culmination of the game on 21 ends.
In club championship news, a game of major triples was played on Friday afternoon which began at 4pm with the game finishing under lights at approximately 7pm.
The three amigos (called that because they play together so much in championships) of Guy Ellery, Steve Turner and Wilbur Harris were always in a 2 bowl 25 end game of Major Triples against evergreen Gordon Dickson, ex-Nyngan bowler Andrew Reynolds and the very experienced Brett (Baldy) Frame right up until the 12th end.
From that stage on Baldy's team stamped their authority and experience on the game to run out worthy winners 28 shots to 17 shots.
