But the Monaco round of the F1 series is not all about what happens on the track. The Monte Carlo district of Monaco is the playground of the rich and famous and everyone else who wants to mix with them.
Everything about Monaco is spectacular. Located between the French Alps and the Mediterranean, Monaco is known for its glitzy casinos and yacht-lined harbour. The city is famous for the Monte Carlo Casino, luxury, boutiques, nightclubs and French and Italian restaurants.
Once a year, the spectacular views of yachts in the harbour are interrupted by an international motor race.
The Monte Carlo casino with it's impressive facade features prominently in the James Bond movies Never Say Never Again and GoldenEye.
The Monaco Grand Prix was first run in 1929,on a narrow course laid out in the streets of Monaco and features tight corners as well as a tunnel, making it one of the most demanding tracks in Formula One. Although it has relatively low average speeds, it is a dangerous place to race.
The track is the setting for early part of the 1966 film Grand Prix starring James Garner, Eva Marie Saint, an Yves Montand.
