The school was a very grateful recipient of a $2500 community investment program grant from Northparkes.
The grant was supplied to support student participation in the Duke of Edinburgh award.
There are three levels of the award - bronze, silver and gold.
Award participants are required to complete four sections at each level:
- Voluntary service
- Skill
- Physical recreation
- Adventurous journey
Each section, except for adventurous journey, is completed independently and students choose their own activities with the help of assessors who are experts in their fields.
The Bronze level takes a minimum of six months to complete, and aims to increase skills such as leadership, resilience and motivation.

More than 130 countries have adopted the Duke of Edinburgh award, and more than eight million young people have participated worldwide.
Over 775,000 people in Australia have participated in the award since it began in 1959.
Along with Award Leader Mrs Helen Vere, seven students from year 10 travelled to Sydney where they completed the 25km Berowra circuit for practice overnight.
They then completed the Great Coast Walk in the Royal National Park south of Sydney for their qualifying hike, which was a 30km overnight hike.
Those students that took part were: Heidi Parkin, Lillianna Walton, Hayley Janssen, Genevieve Bland, Alleah Docena, Madaline Rich and Holly Chalmers.
The Salvation Army Collaroy Centre provided the expert guides and equipment for the students, who each carried a pack with tent, sleeping bag, water, cooking gear and food.
Without the support of Northparkes and the Duke of Edinburgh Award, who have also contributed funds, Parkes High School would be unable to run this worthwhile program.
The program gives a structure for young Australians aged 14 - 24 to realise their ambitions and to change their world by going out of their comfort zones.
