Holy Family has been crowned Todd Woodbridge Cup regional champions following an eventful day in Parkes last Friday. Ten teams competed in the day including schools from Forbes, Eugowra and Parkes. Parkes teams have always been very competitive thus were granted regional status rather than having to go through Zone trials. Hayden Arndell, Zavier Jones, Declan Quade, Sam Morgan, Poppy Fisher, Addie Summerhayes, Hannah Terry, Ashley Terry were excellent representatives of Holy Family and well managed by Mr Berger.
After four rounds the teams all played crossover playoff matches. Then the semi finals saw Holy Family Volleys played Parkes Christian School and Parkes Public Blue took on Parkes East Aces. The scores were both 5 sets to 3 in favour of Holy Family and Parkes Public so while they played the Final, Parkes East defeated Parkes Christian School seven sets to one for the third and fourth playoff.
The final was a thriller. Holy Family won three of the four sets of girls and boys doubles while Parkes Public turned the tables to take three of the four mixed doubles sets. It went to a count-back and it was 78/77 in favour of Holy Family.
Sienna Hunt, Savannah Latu, Milli Mackay, Finlay Quince, Harry Yelland, Eamon Moody and Maki Hornery all played very well for Parkes Public and with quite a few only in Year 3, they will be back in 2020.
The Holy Family team will now have to get practising to take on the other 19 regional winners from across NSW and ACT in the State Finals at Sydney Olympic Park Tennis Centre on Monday November 18th.
Parkes Service Club Junior Open
Parkes Services Club has generously continued their support to Parkes Tennis Club in making this year's Tennis Australia junior tournament an even bigger success than it currently is.
Known as the Parkes Services Club Junior Open across Australia, the 2019 Silver Category tournament which is one of only two West of Sydney will commence this Saturday and run through until Monday and at close of entries attracted 249 entries from across Eastern Australia. The Committee understands the value of providing service to the visitors and have sourced a Barista to supply delicious coffees throughout the three days.
Our tennis Dads will be cooking up a storm with breakfast serving bacon and eggs rolls, as well as sausage sandwiches, whilst our tennis families will be contributing by making lovely homemade treats to sell across the whole weekend. This will compliment the tennis club canteen who is best known for their delicious toasted sandwiches to regular city folk visiting.
Of course any locals are more than welcome to come and join the festivities. Hedley Nicholson has been toiling away for the past couple of months making sure the complex once again meets the visitor's expectations as one of the best centres across NSW. Great to have Club Treasurer Brendon Hunt helping out this year and after a very well attended working bee which Club President Helen Magill said was the best attendance ever, the centre looks spot-on.
Local Players
Abbey Kennedy will play in the 16s and will take to the court for her first singles match around 10am. Maddy McCormick and Molly Kennedy will both play in the 14s not before 10.30am while 9yr old Poppy Fisher will have a great challenge playing in the 12s.
Gabe Goodrick and Joseph Tanswell will compete hard in the 14s and their first round matches will be around 9am. Ethan Hunt will have a crack in the 12s and will be the first of the Parkes players on court at 8am.
Players will all arrive on Friday with practise sessions starting from 1pm. As soon as the sun rises on Saturday players will hit the courts to warm up with first round matches to commence at 8am. With over 160 matches scheduled right through until 7.30pm Saturday night which equates to more than ten three set matches per court and Sunday seeing a similar amount of matches it is going to be a very busy two days in the tournament box for Director Helen Magill who has the unenviable task of keeping everyone happy. All things going to schedule only semis and finals should be left to play from 9am on Monday.
