Parkes bowls

The club has had a fantastic week with both social bowls attendance numbers reaching record highs for this part of the year, and very pleasing competitive zone pennants results as can be seen from the following information.

On Thursday 30 bowlers attended with the results as follows:

On rink 15 the trio of Mike Valentine, Bob Freeman and Rob Irving scored 23 shots to the trio of Jim Blake, George Bradley and Guy Ellery's 17 shots.

On rink 16 Ian (Simmo) Simpson combined very well with Gary McPhee to score 23 shots against the 11 shots of the experienced team of Graham Barby and Geoff Freeman.

On rink 17 George Boatswain and Steve Ryan 21 defeated the duo of Graham Dixon and Rob Tinker 16 shots.

On rink 18 in a very tight match Colin Miller and Warren Bevan 20 defeated Les Kent and John Corcoran 18.

On rink 19 the very much improved Brian Townsend and skip John Ward 21 shots accounted for Ray Jones and Colin Mudie 10 shots.

On rink 20 Allan Affleck and Arthur Corbett 23 shots just got home against the duo of Colin Woods and Tony Riordan 20 shots.

In the final rink 21 John Watson and Greg Huggins 23 shots had a convincing 8 shot win over Mal Porter and Ron Hornery 15 shots.

On Saturday 38 bowlers attended for a mix of both social and championship lawn bowls with the following results:

On rink 8 John Carr and Bruce Orr were dominant with their 9 shot win over Colin Hayward and Arthur Corbett.

On rink 11 Mike Valentine and Brian Townsend 25 shots proved their practice is paying off by defeating the duo of Greg Huggins and Colin Woods 16 shots.

On rink 12 in a very close fought game Jim Blake and Ray Jones 21 shots accounted for the duo of Rob Tinker and John Dunn 20 shots.

On rink 13 in the first of 2 triples games Brenda Davies, Michael Simpson and John Ward were way too good for the trio of Maureen Miller, Cronulla visitor Garry Ridley and skip Tony Riordan when they recorded a convincing 32 shots to 16 shots win.

On the final social rink Cronulla visitor Clair Ridley, George Bradley and Colin Miller 17 shots just sneaked home against the trio of Joanne Simpson, Gordon Dickson and Rob Irving 15 shots.

Championship news

On Saturday the major 4s final was played with the four of Tom Furey, Guy Ellery, Steve Turner and Wilbur Harris being triumphant when recording a 22 shots to 15 shots against the four of Graham Barby, Steve Ryan, Mick Went and Joe Davies.

Team Davies went through a very lean 7 ends from the 4th until the 10th when team Harris had by this stage moved out to a 9 shot lead.

Team Davies fought back to score on the 13th, 15th, 16th, 17th, 19th and 21st but it was never going to be enough against Wilbur Harris' brilliant skips game both in his direction of his troops and the bowls he played.

In a first-round match of major triples Andrew Reynolds, Gary McPhee and Brett (Baldy) Frame combined well to record 27 shots against the trio of Ian Simpson, John Wright and Brian (Sticks) Hampton 22 shots.

Team Frame raced out to a 7 shot lead and then fell into a hole of their own making with team Hampton taking advantage of some short bowls being played by the opposition.

Team Hampton went on a scoring spree scoring from the 4th to 9th end before team Frame came alive on the 10th end onwards to dominate over the next six ends to set the groundwork for a 27 shots to 22 shots win.

Pennants news

On Sunday our No 2 and No 5 pennants teams played at home to a large crowd of spectators who were rewarded in watching both our teams record a win.

In a classic nail biter the No 2's recorded a 66 to 65 shots win against West Dubbo in a game for the ages. Two rinks went okay and one struggled but enough was done to walk away with a 9-1 win.

So after two games, we are on the top of the board with 18.5 points out of a possible 20. Another win would probably seal it for us in this tight competition to proceed to the final 16 in the state with these games being played both at the Parkes Bowling and Sports Club and the Parkes Railway Diggers.

The players who have stepped up this year and are performing so well are to be congratulated for their inspiring performances. A special mention to our female player Maree Grant who is performing very well.

The 5s reversed their fortunes from last week to record a 9-1 win against a strong Condobolin side and still be in contention. While the Eugowra opposition last week was tough, this week was not going to be any different and Gary McPhee was moved down to the 5s to help out the rink who struggled last week. This rink was the difference with a 23 to 13 win with one other rink winning and one losing; and all players played their part in the rink win.

The 5s still have a chance if they win well in their next game in a fortnight.

Veterans golf

Parkes' Nym Dziuba had a day to remember at the twin-towns veterans golf competition, played at Forbes last week.

The consistent Dziuba scored 27 points for the 12 holes to win by two points from local and recent newcomer to the vet's competition, Les Little.

But it didn't stop there for Dziuba as he collected a rare double in winning the A grade nearest the pins on the 9th and 18th holes.

Thirty-six players contested the event with Forbes proving too strong in the teams event, winning the Mick Miller shield 145 points to 135.

The ball sweep went to 22 points and the winners were: 24 points - Alf Davies, Geoff Drane, Trevor Toole, L. O'Connor and Steve Edwards (all Forbes); 23 - Peter Barnes, Barry Parker and Peter Scholfield (F); 22 -Brain Clarke and M. Toohey (F), Joe Davies, John Fowler and TomDelmenico (P).

The encouragement award went to Rob Lea of Parkes.

Parkes players John Fowler and Csaba Belley shared the B grade nearest the pins on the 9th and 18th holes respectively.

This week Forbes will host the 18 holes Lachlan Valley event.

It is a 10am hit-off and early registrations are requested.
