Parkes Shire students undertaking their first year of full-time university studies in 2020 are encouraged to apply for a Jack Scoble Scholarship.

Supported by the Parkes Shire Council, the Jack Scoble Scholarship offers local students the chance to receive financial assistance to help them embark on tertiary studies.
The scholarship can be used for such items as relocation and accommodation costs, or the purchase of a laptop and text books.
Parkes Shire Councillor Bill Jayet said The Jack Scoble Scholarship honours the memory of one of the Shire's most respected former leaders.
"Mr Scoble was especially passionate about the education, health and future well-being of young people, and it's important that we continue to honour his memory by supporting local school leavers to pursue and achieve their aspirations," Cr Jayet said.
The late Mr Scoble MBE, OAM was Mayor of Parkes from 1966 to 1979.
He died in 2003, providing a profound legacy of community involvement, civic pride, leadership and high personal values.
During its 14 year history, the Jack Scoble Education Scholarships have provided financial assistance to students to the value of $85,000 between 2006 and 2019.
In 2019, the Scholarship was awarded to Riley Crocker and Georgia Goodrick.
Riley is heading into his second year at the University of Newcastle after successfully completed his first year of a science degree in 2019.
Riley used the scholarship to assist with ongoing accommodation costs, field trips and university-related fees.
Georgia commenced her Bachelor of Paramedicine in 2019 and said that the scholarship made the transition to university a lot smoother.
"Without this scholarship I would have had to start working immediately after moving as well as studying full-time as a first year," Georgia said.
"I was able to purchase a much-needed new laptop, as well as all of my textbooks and uniform.
"I recommend applying to every school leaver intending to pursue a university degree straight out of school, it's definitely worth your time."
Applicants must be:
- residents of Parkes Shire who have completed the Higher School Certificate in 2018 or 2019 at either a school within the Shire; or a school outside of the Shire as non- boarding students.
- entering their first year of full-time university studies either immediately after graduating
- high school, or, after a gap period of no longer than 24 months.
- undertaking a course of study that will offer a benefit to the rural community.
