Men's Bowls
Not much to talk about this week. No Championship matches were played and the wind and dust storm on Saturday kept the bowlers at home.

Social Bowls Thursday, September 19
It was good to see both greens full to capacity with our Ladies Bowls Club hosting the Taber Shield competition with teams from far and wide playing. The Men's bowls club would like to congratulate the Central West side (which included members from our Club) on winning the competition on the day.
The Men's club we still managed to get four games of Pairs and one game of Triples played with some close results.
The team of John Davies and Graham Barby got off to a great start in their match against Steve Ryan and Ray Jones. After three ends John and Graham lead 7-0 and still held the lead 9-6 on the tenth end. On the eleventh end they scored six shots but then conceded five shots on the next end. By the sixteenth end they had a lead of 20- 12 but Steve and Ray fought back winning four of the last five ends but John and Graham held on to win the match 22-20.
In another close game Wally Grant and Bob Freeman came up against Bernie Mitchell and Tony Byrne. Things were very even and with four ends to play the scores were tied, 14 all. However, Wally and Bob found form and won all of the last four ends to run out winners 19-14.
Other results were:
- Brett Frame and Jim Blake 22 - Gary McPhee and John Watson 16
- Guy Ellery and Gordon Dickson 30 - Col Mudie and Trevor Harvey 18
- Steve Turner, Ron Hornery and Graham Huggins 23 - Col Hayward, Rob Irving and John Wright 11
- The Lucky Rink was Rink 7 but Brett, Jim, Gary and John did not manage to win the Prize of $160.

Netball
What a great first week for netball, awesome work to all the teams that played it was great to see so many people there on Tuesday.
Just a reminder to all teams to ensure you are at the courts with enough time to get your team organized and on the court on time. We need to ensure games start on time, so the bell will ring even if players are not on the court. All teams are to ensure that there are only 3 male team members on the court at any given time. One in GD or GK, one in GA or GS and one anywhere else.
Can all umpires please ensure they sign the scorecard, and if you are replacing an umpire please cross off their name and write your name on the sheet. Players also need to sign the scorecard each week.
We still have a number of players who are not registered. Anyone who's name is highlighted on the scorecard means they haven't registered and will not be able to take the court. If you have any troubles with registrations please let us know so we can help.

Racing
Racing from Colin Hodges. For over a century the Ryan family have been involved in racing at Bathurst, both before and since the opening of the new track in the 1950's at Tyers Park.Don Ryan who is still a trainer at Bathurst was an apprentice jockey with his father Frank Ryan who trained at the old track at Eglinton and prepared very good gallopers including Pan Star ( sired by dual Melbourne Cup winner Peter Pan ) and the 1948 Coonamble Cup winner Glentat.
"As an apprentice you had to ride pretty well as you were competing against wonderful horsemen such as " Matey " Molloy, Ned Dougherty, Arthur Seymour, Mervyn Seymour, and " Banjo " Bell, " recalls Don Ryan."
Another great jockey who had just retired from race riding before I started was Ossie Cahill, the father of present day jockeys Michael Cahill and Mathew Cahill ", Don added.First winner for Don Ryan was at Cowra on Easter Monday 1951 on Gold Fort trained at Newbridge by Clarry Davis.Gold Fort won 4 straight and another good horse ridden to wins by Don Ryan was Rata Lad trained by Dave Jenkins at Bathurst. Two years in to his apprenticeship Don was seriously injured in a fall at Molong races which ended his jockey career and later he became both a racecaller and a trainer.
For over ten years the talented Don Ryan called the races at Bathurst, Orange, Cowra, Mudgee, Gulgong and several other tracks.
As a trainer , Don Ryan won his first Bathurst Cup in 1966 with Ecrates, ridden by Sammy Mezzasalma.
Ecrates winner of 14 races and beaten a nose at Randwick by the Neville Begg trained Rue Nought, was owned by Hartley Williams the father of Gowan Williams the well known racing statistician and long time publisher with his late wife of the popular Aimer Racing Weekly.
Don Ryan regards Ecrates As the best horse he has trained and for many years the Ecrates Cup donated by Gowan Williams was raced for at Bathurst.
In year 2000 the well named Wide And Blue ( by Yonder ), ridden by Mathew Cahill, became the second Bathurst Cup winner for Don Ryan, when winning by over two lengths from Trust No One and Magic Fun.
A steady stream of outstanding gallopers have since been prepared at the well appointed Ryan stables close to Bathurst racecourse including Warwick Farm winner Amourous.
Now retired as a broodmare, Amourous produced the following Ryan trained offspring, So Generous ( dual Canterbury winner ), Our Canny Boy ( winner of five of first six starts and second at Randwick ), Somebody ( multiple winner and second in a Highway in Sydney ), Kindness ( in a restricted class race at Dubbo defeated Shiraz a subsequent Group 3 winner in Sydney and Melbourne ) and Happiest ( Cowra winner ).
Other good performers from the Ryan stable have included, Annecy, Ave and Harrietta.Don Ryan married Diane Windsor who grew up on a dairy farm at picturesque Evans Plains outside Bathurst and members of the Windsor family still operate the dairy which is one of the last remaining in the region.Don and Diane have five children, Bernard, Stephen.
Andrew, Catherine And Olivia who all have a keen interest in racing and will be out in force at the Ray White Emms Mooney Bathurst Cup meeting on Sunday.
Bernard who worked for ten years at the Australian Jockey Club ( AJC ) is presently a Director on the Bathurst Thoroughbred Racing Board and is a Partner in the Ray White Real Estate Agency at Neutral Bay.
Stephen Ryan, the Senior Partner in Edney Ryan Chartered Accountants at Mosman, looks after the racehorse breeding and racing management side of the Ryan Bloodstock operation at Bathurst.
In 2016 a trainer partnership was established between Don Ryan and his son Andrew Ryan who had experience as a jockey but only briefly , with a handful of rides at Orange and Bathurst Picnic meetings.
Andrew Ryan is a very good horseman and the partnership with his father has proved most successful.
The Ryan family have great respect and admiration both as a jockey and as a person for Eleanor Webster-Hawes who regularly travels from Cowra to ride trackwork at Bathurst and most of the Ryan horses in races.
There was much excitement among the Ryan family when Eleanor Webster-Hawes recently rode her first Sydney winner, Worldly Pleasure, trained at Bathurst by Dean Mirfin and owned locally by the Deal family and friends.
Apart from the 1800 metres Ray White Emms Mooney Showcase Bathurst Cup on Sunday a new race will also feature for the sprinters, the $40,000 The Panorama over 1300 metres.
