From May 20 to 26, thousands of events will be held across the country to say thank you to the six million Australians who volunteer their time. Parkes State Emergency Service (SES) is one such volunteer organisation that consists of members who generously give their own time to engage in the community performing rescue work, assisting with storm and flood damage, as well as community events such as street parade marshalling and car parking, with Parkes Elvis festival alone attracting around 100 SES members from across the state.

Parkes SES are always keen for new volunteers and no matter what your fitness levels background, skills or training are, you can contribute to the unit in many ways. Whilst most people join to help with in the field and response work there are many areas that members can contribute including operations management, communications, training, administration, logistics, community education, catering and equipment maintenance.
Local Commander, Phil Snow said National Volunteers Week was a great way to recognise the efforts of all volunteers. "Not only do we celebrate National Volunteers Week in May for all volunteering organisations, the SES also have their own 'Wear Orange Wednesday' on May 22," he said. "We ask that everyone wear something orange for the day as recognition for the work the SES volunteers do. and we encourage businesses to allow employees to wear orange where practical".

He encouraged everyone to show their gratitude to the hardworking SES volunteers who selflessly give up their time to help their local communities prepare for and respond to the worst that nature has to offer. The NSW SES has over 9,500 volunteers who give up their time to train for and respond to emergencies and natural disasters and are on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and last year responded to over 32,000 requests for assistance.
NSW SES Commissioner, Kyle Stewart, said that wearing orange on Wednesday, May 22 was a great opportunity to acknowledge the hardworking SES Volunteers. "This is just a small way local communities can show their appreciation for these amazing everyday people who put on their orange overalls to help people during the most difficult time in their lives," he said.
Volunteering is a great way to be involved in your community. Parkes SES has regular training nights every Wednesday at their headquarters at the of corner Clarke and Alluvial Streets from 7pm to 9pm.
