The PAC Park rejuvenation project in East Street and the Lindner Oval project in Peak Hill were officially opened mid-December, both co-funded by Parkes Shire Council and the NSW Government's Social Housing Community Improvement Fund.
Lindner Oval features new play equipment, a new shade cloth and a new outdoor exercise station.
Parkes Shire Council earmarked the Linder Oval masterplan as a priority for Peak Hill after receiving community feedback during the Parkes 2030 community consultations.
The PAC Park project included the construction of two shelters, two table settings, a double electric barbecue and lighting.
The National Bird Week event in Parkes on October 21 was the first community gathering held at the new barbeque shelter.
“Since 2015, we have invested $20 million under the SHCIF program in projects which improve community infrastructure, enhance open spaces, improve safety, increase accessibility for older people or people with a disability, or facilitate integration between social housing and the broader community,” Minister for Social Housing Pru Goward said.
“These upgrades at PAC Park and Lindner Oval give locals two brilliant locations to get together, socialise and enjoy a barbecue.
“I am thrilled the NSW Government was able to help with these wonderful new facilities and I know they will be much enjoyed by the Parkes and Peak Hill communities.”
State Member for Orange Phil Donato also congratulated all those involved who helped to deliver the project for the community.
“It’s fantastic that Peak Hill now has new exercise and playground equipment installed at Lindner Oval,” he said.
“Rural communities need support through government grants to help deliver infrastructure to support community, particularly with exercise and sport for all ages – because that’s what brings a rural community together.
“The PAC Park enhancements will provide infrastructure which will encourage community visitation to this great parkland.”
In an announcement following the official openings, Parkes Shire Mayor Ken Keith said health and wellness is central to the community.
“Council is committed to improving our community infrastructure to help support and encourage our residents to lead active lifestyles,” he said.
“Under the guidance of Council's Pedestrian and Cycling Strategy, the Parkes Shire now boasts a wonderful range of walking and cycling routes, outdoor exercise equipment and recreational spaces that can be utilised by all ages and fitness levels.”
