Parkes Shire Council, in partnership with Central West Lachlan Landcare and the Lachlan Valley branch of the National Parks Association will host the free community breakfast cooked by the Rotary Club of Parkes.
This event will be a chance to enjoy the new PAC Park rejuvenation works and learn about some of our local bird species.
As part of National Bird Week celebrations, community members are encouraged to take part in the Aussie Backyard Bird Count by spending 20 minutes outdoors this October and count the birds they see.
Council's Environmental and Sustainability Coordinator, Michael Chambers said the Aussie Backyard Bird Count is a great opportunity for people of all ages to get outside into nature.
“Participating in the activity is fun and provides valuable data about the bird life in our region, state and country,” Michael said.
“To take part, download the Aussie Backyard Bird Count app on your mobile device to help identify local birds based on size, colour and location.
“The aim is to count more than two million birds in seven days nationally.”
Funded by the NSW Government’s Social Housing Improvement Fund, the PAC Park rejuvenation project included the construction of two shelters, two table settings, a double electric barbecue and lighting.
Last year 48 observers participated in the bird count within the Parkes Shire, recording a total of 2122 individual birds across 67 bird species, up from 1287 birds in 2016.
The introduced House Sparrow led the tally, followed closely by the Common Blackbird and the Common Starling, two other introduced species.
The Australian Raven and the Galah rounded out the top five.
Out of 67 species recorded in the Parkes Shire in 2017, only four are introduced species.
