Bill bought the Pontiac in Queensland three years ago. "I was looking to buy an older car and I had fond memories of my courting days in a 1950's Pontiac so I started my search for a Pontiac when I came across this one." Bill said. "It was an older restoration, last painted in 1982 and last registered in 1992."
Bill told me he's spent the last three years getting the Pontiac reliable enough to hit the roads again. He had the motor reconditioned in Dookie in Victoria. The straight-six engine is a side valve six cylinder designed and produced by Pontiac in the U.S. in 1926.
It's matched to a three speed manual transmission. "I had the radiator reconditioned and refurbished in Queensland" Bill said "and a few other mechanical repairs done here in Parkes."
Bill and Cathy's Pontiac is a four door tourer which has been finished in a Datsun Blue with Jet Black running boards and fenders.
It's a six wheeler which means it has two spare wheels which tuck in neatly behind the front guards. It features a vinyl roof and suicide doors and inside has a bench seat front and back providing room for five or six passengers depending on how close for comfort you feel like getting.
There's an old fashioned luggage trunk on the back of the Pontiac which was a popular feature on cars of this era and Bill said it's a great asset for carrying tools and bits and pieces.
The steel spoked rims are big 19 inch wheels and there's an electric start but still access for a crank handle as a back up.
When I spoke to Bill and Cathy about their Pontiac it was at the recent Eugowra Car and Bike Show and Bill told me that this was only their third outing in the Pontiac.
"It's by no means a fast car" Bill said. "We sat on 60 -65 km/h all the way which was slow but comfortable for an old set of wheels".
