Amanda Butler has recently moved to Peak Hill from Sydney and has brought along with her a passion that has been in her family for three generations. Her car is a 1973 Datsun 180B SSS and she says with pride that she’s only had three years in her life without a SSS.

The story starts back in the 1970’s when Amanda’s parents owned a ‘73 SSS (exactly the same as this one) before Amanda was born. At the time, her grandfather and her uncle both of whom were mechanics owned a SSS each as well.
Amanda remembers the car vividly and also remembers being in tears when her parents sold it because there was no room for the family.
“I’ve always been into cars” Amanda said. ”My first job was at Supa Cheap and the blokes used to come in and ask to speak to one of the male staff. I’d deliberately send them to the newest and dumbest fella there and they’d invariably end up coming back to talk to me.”

At age 16, Amanda bought her own SSS, two years after her parents had sold theirs.
She went on to do her trade as a motor mechanic and the 180B was soon modified with an SR20 turbo, six speed, mag wheels and custom paint and interior.
Amanda owned that car for 13 years and ironically sold it for the same reason as her parents had done – not enough family space!
Twelve months ago the absence of a SSS had become too great and Amanda bought this car because it was exactly what her parents had owned.
It’s a 1.8 litre motor with twin carburettors and a three speed auto. It was originally a Sydney car but Amanda found it in the hands of a collector in Melbourne and just had to have it.
She serviced it and fitted some fresh tyres and is enjoying a trip down memory lane once again. As fate would have it, Amanda has since bought back her original 180B SSS.
It’s had some more work done to it and Amanda has even bigger plans for it second time around, so after not seeing a 180B SSS for years, watch this space for another.
