The evening was held in the school hall, where many helpful and useful pieces of information were passed on to interested parents.
Teachers from all faculties who teach this year’s Year 7 cohort were at the night and were introduced to parents.
Many parents were appreciative to finally put a face to the name that their children had been talking about and then had the opportunity to personally talk to many of the teachers.
A highlight of the night was the BBQ prepared by the Students Representative Council when the teachers, parents and students had a chance to chat and get to know each other.
It was fantastic to see so many supportive families attend.
Mrs Carter thanked the parents and expressed she was looking forward to working in partnership with all the parents to ensure their children had a wonderful educational opportunity at Parkes High School.
SRC leaders set plans for 2016
On Tuesday, February 23, the PHS Student Representative Council travelled to Orange to participate in the annual leadership day.
Ms Tamara Donavan (SRC Coordinator) and Mrs Justine Morrissey (SRC Mentor) addressed the students at the course on what makes an effective SRC and what were the expectations of all SRC Representatives.
The Year 12 representatives each explained their roles for the year including chairman, secretary, correspondence secretary, treasurer, publicity officer and Senior Aboriginal Representatives.
A lot of discussion centred around what the SRC could do to improve Parkes High for the students and staff.
Year 12 students worked with their allotted year group as mentors and decided on goals such as student versus teacher challenges, random acts of kindness campaign, investigating additional shade for students, fundraising ideas and the setting of rosters for running of morning assemblies, working in the canteen, organising year meetings and the prestigious student of the semester.
After the course was completed all students had fun Tenpin Bowling.
The PHS SRC is looking forward to another effective and productive year.
PDHPE students are well equipped to help save lives
Forty eight PDHPE Preliminary course students were fortunate to have the experience of obtaining their Senior First Aid course recently.
The course was delivered by the wonderful first aid staff from Northparkes Mine over 3 sessions.
The PDHPE students of Parkes High gained first aid qualifications as part of the Preliminary course First Aid optional topic, which provides them with skills and knowledge.
The students covered important aspects such as assessing and responding to a medical emergency, including CPR.
They had to display skills to keep themselves and patients safe, and treating patients for a variety and array of medical conditions from anaphylaxis, fractures, and wounds, through to heart conditions and spinal injuries.
The staff and students of Parkes High would like to extend huge thanks to the wonderful presenters on the day in particular Adam James, Phil Kelly, Wayne Sargent. Special mention to Brooke Lees for her fantastic performance as the victim in the first aid scenarios.
