The junior development squads and performance squad are developing their fitness and improved footwork skills along with their consistency and accuracy carrying out most of their skill work in the constraints of half court.
Parkes JDS: Harry Dawson was the outstanding performer from the Parkes JDS played last weekend. Harry was gutted when he missed out on the Parkes High team last month but has bounced back and showing the form which would've had him pressing for a top two finish.
Abbey Kennedy won the 16s division while Mitch Arndell, Ethan Hunt, Faith Clarke and Tia Dunn all made the playoffs in the 12s. Poppy Fisher finished third in the 10s.
Thank you to all the Parkes juniors who supported the event. It was a great day with 75 competitors from across the region. The next JDS is at Dubbo on June 16. Entries close on Wednesday, June 12. www.tournaments.tennis.com.au/sport/tournament.aspx?id=A767D31F-5CF6-4629-9240-24D12733ACAE.
There will be a training afternoon on Saturday June 15th from 3.30pm run by Far West Academy Coach Ken Wray. If any Parkes juniors would like to attend the training, please let Helen know and she will forward names to Ken.
Canberra JT: Abbey and Molly Kennedy along with Maddy McCormick travelled to Canberra on the weekend to compete in the AMT and JT event. Abbey lost in the 2nd round of the 16s to the 2nd seed 6/4, 7/5 in a competitive match while Maddy also lost in the 2nd round in the 14s to a seeded player. Maddy and Molly played doubles and were into the semi finals which was a superb effort when this column went to print. Abbey lost in the quarters of the doubles and was playing in the Open Womens Consolation event yesterday. Unfortunately Jake Magill had to withdraw from the tournament due to injury.
Junior Comp: Round 4 today in junior comp. Some results throughout the divisions are as follows-
Tarlei Glastonbury and Kelsey Mann have hit their straps this term and showing nice improvement in their play. They defeated the Terry twins last week while Jacques vanWyk and Oliver Westcott played a good match with Thomas Simpson and Sam Riley winning 15/8. Sam Riley is one of the biggest improvers this term and this is because he's at the courts 2 or 3 days a week and really enjoying his tennis, understanding what he needs to work on and doing his best to execute.
Jack Greenland and Mitch Wirth are also hitting some nice shots and working well together. Hey accounted for PJ McPherson and Mitch Boggs.
After a big day at the Parkes JDS Liliani Latu and Phoebe Forbes scored a solid 15/7 win over Riley Jones and Zavier Jones. The girls are improving and spending more time on court during the week which is great to see.
Sienna Hunt is another one who is improving every week. Sienna has been working hard on her serving and this is showing in her comp matches with very few doubles faults. Her persistent attitude is a credit to her and coach Phoebe who are working together.
Wins to Faith Clarkes and Tia Dunn, Nia Boggs and Hayden Arndell as well as Mitch Unger and Ethan Hunt saw the scoreboard continue to be close at the top going into round 4 today.
In the Red division it was Anna Orr who was on top last week with a huge ten games while Daisy Rice secured eight games. Anna and Daisy are developing well and will be the next to move into the Orange Division but have to continue to work on their backhands and over arm serving to make the jump.
Free Friday: A reminder the courts are free to use on Friday afternoons from 3pm until dark. Once the lights need to be switched on there will be a fee to cover those costs. Spare racquets and balls are available to use.
