Heatley joined the Australian Army after completing his schooling here at Parkes High School in 1982.
He graduated from the Australian Defence Force Academy in 1994 and then the Royal Military College at Duntroon in 1995.
Prior to joining the defence force, Heatley came to Parkes after returning to Australia from New Zealand, as his mother Margaret had returned beforehand to receive medical treatment.
Currently Heatley serves as the Deputy Director of Army's Test and Evaluation Agency, which is a continuation of a career focus on capability development that manages the development and introduction of new equipment into the hands of soldiers.
He is a graduate of the Australian Command and Staff College and holds a Masters of Project Management.
His awards include two Australian Defence Force Commendations, and two United States Meritorious Service Medals.
Parkes RSL Sub Branch secretary Paul Thomas said his organisation was proud that Lt Colonel Heatley will be the town's official Anzac Day special Guest of Honour this year and that they would once again be host to another Parkes local who has risen to the top ranks of Australia's Military Forces.
