Just before Christmas, the libraries called on the Parkes Shire community to give a gift of a book to donate to children in 200 schools in remote areas of northern Australia.
Parkes partnered with the Foundation to support their ‘Books and Library Project’.
The community rallied around the library’s ‘Gift a Book’ campaign, placing 521 books under the libraries Christmas trees.
The books were distributed in January.
Parkes Branch Librarian Andrea Lovell was delighted with the response from the community.
“We believe every child should have books to read,” Andrea said.
“Exposure to books in early childhood is a vital for their literacy success.
“The Library and Aboriginal Literacy Foundation thank the community for gifting so many books that will begin to transform the lives of Aboriginal children.”
The books have begun to find their new homes in remote northern Australia with parents and educators who are passionate about educating the young people in their communities.
