The first thing I did on Monday morning was type out some handwritten captions from the Tullamore Show. This proved harder said than done as free hand running writing is sometimes hard to decipher. We went down to Parkes Public School to interview an artist who was recording children speaking in Wiradjuri for an art installation. We heard of a house fire and rushed out to the scene. I took a video of the burning house that ended up on Prime 7 News that night. This was a very interesting start to the week. On Tuesday I took some photos of Clarinda Street before it is ‘beautified’, and Wednesday was a big day. I interviewed other work experience students to see what other Parkes High students were up to.
Then we headed out to the Trundle Show. We came across the dogs which were all extremely cute and then moved on to the cattle. After taking some photos of families I enjoyed some independence taking photos of the sheep shearing. I stopped by the Parkes Shire Council stall to ask questions and take photos. I chatted to the men at the Lachlan Valley Noxious Weeds Trailer. They were very friendly and excited to tell me all about their trailer and its aim at the show.
As per tradition, I made a cake from scratch to bring in on Thursday. After morning tea I walked to Parkes Public School to interview three more work experience students. It was really interesting to hear about and write about their week at work. My favourite part of the week was learning so much about what journalists do, like how they put stories together and the type of questions they ask as well as seeing how the paper comes together. My week was very enjoyable as the people I was working with were so lovely and helpful and gave me a real insight into journalism. I really had the best time.
