John Bowd of Tommy Ward’s Boxing is moving to retire on the central coast after a very successful period with the well known local boxing academy.
John, often referred to as the backbone of his operation by Tommy, has been an integral part of the success of Tommy’s gym.
For many years now, John has maintained the equipment in the gym, kept the shed tidy and is the main man when it comes to the assembly of the ring which the gym hires out to raise money.
They are forced to do this to help with funding to keep the gym going.
John has worked extensively with all the boys, teaching them a unique style of boxing which has helped win many bouts.
He has worked with one boxer in particular to great success.
John’s style has led to Brad Moss being undefeated in his last seven bouts, a remarkable achievement.
“John will leave a massive hole in our gym,” Tommy said.
“He has been fantastic for the boys and they will surely miss him.
“John has been a rock which we could all always rely upon and it will take a big joint-effort to fill his shoes.
“Everyone involved with the gym wishes him all the best on the central coast,” he said.
Tommy’s boxers returned from a fight night in Nyngan after enjoying a lot of succes.
Wes Ormsby had his first fight in an exhibition bout.
He was fighting a much older boy but did enough to suggest he will be a very capable boxer.
Reese Large went into his second bout at Nyngan after not having much training in preparation.
Reese started methodically, counter punching all the time.
He wore his opponent down and the fight was stopped in the last round with Reese enjoying a good win.
Brad Moss fought for the NSW Light Welterweight title in the first of the title fights.
From the first bell, indications were clear that it was going to be a close fight.
After a slow start, Brad was forced to work really hard in the final two rounds.
Using all of his punches, Brad was able to win the match in a tight points decision and claim the title.
Next in the ring was Lachlan “Cowboy” Cox who was chasing the NSW Country Welterweight Intermediate title.
Lachlan was excellent in the first two rounds, weaving in and out while taking a lot of punches on the gloves.
He was strong again in the third, before not doing enough in the final round to go down in a split decision.
Joe Pearce competed for the NSW Western Division Middleweight title.
Joe’s original opponent withdrew at the last minute, forcing him to box against a much older opponent.
It was a hard fight for Joe as he was hit with some big shots.
He kept going at his opponent, gaining recognition for his tough display from some of the top trainers in the central west.
Joe lost the bout in a split decision.
The week before, Joe travelled to Casino in the state’s north to compete in the Globe League.
He put together a great performance to win an Australian title against a much more experienced boxer from Queensland.
Next in the ring in Nyngan was Steve Chislett, competing in his first serious bout for 12 months.
Up against an opponent from Castle Hill, Steve was chasing the NSW Country Welterweight title.
His opponent was tough and in good form after winning a NSW title the week before.
It was a good battle with Steve taking a lot of punches on his gloves.
In a match that could have gone either way, Steve came out on top to claim the title.
Reese Large, Wes Ormsby, Alex Cole, Georgie Fay, Shane Bateson, Kyle Jones and Darren Moss will all be in action at Dubbo tonight.
