Parkes is a hive of activity with construction on a number of major projects commencing. Last week we bid farewell to the 56-year-old Parkes Community Centre in Cooke Park. The building was demolished to make way for the new $4.2 million Multipurpose Centre, co-funded by the Australian Government through the Building Better Regions fund and Parkes Shire Council.

The new facility will include an events stage, multipurpose room, kitchen facilities, flexi-room and accessible amenities. Contractors, K&H sorted all the building materials to be recycled, with the internal wares donated to Parkes Can Assist.
Preliminary work in lower Clarinda Street continues, ahead of the Main Street Revitalisation project commencing in September. Throughout August, council will remove and replace the water main on the western side of the street from the Town Square to 216 Clarinda Street (old Dwyer's Butchery). Temporary footpath closures will be in place intermittently to allow for the work to be undertaken. For project updates, visit www.parkes.nsw.gov.au.
To open up additional parking spaces during the Main Street Revitalisation and Library Expansion, council is constructing a temporary carpark on the western end of Dalton Street. Preliminary site work was carried out last week, ahead of the former Taxi Office at 14-22 Dalton Street being demolished this week.
A temporary road closure will be in place at Dalton Street and McGee's Lane from Monday, August 5 to Wednesday, August 7.
Parkes Shire Library staff have begun the move up to their temporary home in Clarinda Street, ahead of work commencing on the expansion of the current library building.
The $2.2 million Parkes Shire Library Expansion Project - funded by the NSW Government's Regional Cultural Fund, Public Library Infrastructure Grant and council - will deliver new dynamic art, cultural and education spaces including an intergenerational maker space. While the exciting new library space is being built, Parkes Shire Library will relocate to Shop 2, 250 Clarinda Street, Parkes (alongside Discount Dave's) for 12 months. To allow staff to relocate into the new space, the library closed its doors on Monday, August 5 and will reopen at its new premises on September 2.

Congratulations to the Parkes Elvis Festival team on being inducted into the Festival and Events Hall of Fame at the 2019 Regional Tourism Awards. It is all thanks to our wonderful community, hard working volunteers and devoted staff that has enabled the event to achieve international acclaim.
Council received Highly Commended for its Business Attraction Campaign at the R H Dougherty Awards for Excellence in Communications. The campaign targeted industry investors through a strategic multi-media marketing, supported by the NSW Government's Regional Growth - Marketing and Promotion Fund to attract major logistics, manufacturing, warehousing and distribution companies to establish operations in Parkes.
Locals are encouraged to learn more about the Recycled Water Scheme (RWS) at the upcoming Community Information Sessions. Council will provide an overview of the RWS, where and how recycled water will be used, and technical information on the treatment processes and scheme operation.
