Western battled through a heavy defeat on Monday’s opening day of the NSW Primary School Sports Association Boys’ Championship in Orange, the red and greens suffering a nine-wicket loss to a powerhouse Hunter side.

Western coach Jordan Moran, from Dubbo, admitted it was far from the ideal start as his side looks to back up last year’s third finish but even so, he’s not too worried just yet.
After all, last year Western was thumped first-up before scoring three straight victories to finish with the bronze medal.
Western was under the pump early, Hunter’s quicks boasting quite a bit more pace than the hosts were expecting.
That, combined with what Moran labelled a couple of silly shots, had a huge impact as Western was rolled for just 69.
Condobolin’s Riley Keen was the best with a stoic, 42-ball 15 from number 10, while Parkes’ Hunter Hawke (11) and Nashdale’s Gus Cornish (11) were the only other two batsmen to pass double figures.
Parkes’ other representative, Ryan Dunford, managed just three before being trapped in front.
Hunter made light work of the chase, running Western’s total down with 26 overs and nine wickets in hand.
Harry Scowen (18 not out) and Jamie Farthing (11) added 27 for the first wicket, the former and Harry Liackman (23 not out) securing the win after that.
Meanwhile, Mackillop put the entire competition on notice with and astonishing victories over North West while, at time of print, Sydney West was on its way to an equally as stunning win.
Mackillop routed North West by 182 runs at Country Club, while after posting 3-304. At time of print Barrier was 7-7 in reply, after 11 overs.
All seven of Mackillop’s batsmen remained unbeaten as the maroons posted 213, the entire top five retiring to give the guys below them a hit.
Of those five, Sam Konstas smashed a stunning 100 from 142 balls to kick off his campaign in style while his opening partner Tom Forrester produced a great knock of 52.
Then, Mackillop bowled North West out for 31, Oliver Smith doing the damage with 4-7 from three overs.
The tournament continues on Tuesday.
