I spoke to Scott recently about his amazingly original HZ Holden.
It’s a 1978 GTS sedan and it presents beautifully in Palais White with factory pin striping and wire spoked wheels.
Most people will remember these cars with the popular GTS wheels but Scott tells me that the wire spokes were a factory fitted option which were originally ordered for this car when it was sold new in Coonamble.
When Scott bought the car three years ago, it had been fitted with a set of aftermarket hot wire mag wheels.
He soon changed them to the GTS wheels but after some clever searching he was able to find a set of wire spokes like the original order.
“That was always my aim, to keep the car as original as possible,” Scott said.
Even down to the original Moodys Motors dealership sticker on the back window.
There were only 1438 HZ GTS sedans built in various colours from late 1977 to 1978.
It has very low mileage and been well looked after by the previous owners, so apart from some paint touch ups and minor mechanicals Scott and Julie have enjoyed the driving.
They are both fans of the HZ model.
Scott owned one as his second-ever car.
When I asked him why the HZ, he said he remembers a mate having a GTS just like this one in the eighties and that he’d always wanted one, so after owning a yellow GTS for a few years he set about finding this beauty.
He reckons the HZ was always a better ride than the previous HJ model hence his passion.
Scott and Julie love getting the car out on weekends especially when the weather’s fine.
“Its a 5 litre V8 with a 4 speed manual gearbox so its great to drive and we’ve done pretty well at the car shows with it,” Scott said.
Locally, he and Julie have received trophies at Dubbo, Grenfell, Eugowra, Orange and here in Parkes but the pinnacle was achieving Most Original Vehicle at the All Holden Day in Sydney last year.
Along with a few other CWCC members, Scott and Julie will be taking their HZ to the All Holden Day again this year to be held at Hawkesbury Showground this weekend (August 1 and 2).
