Last Sunday’s third annual Northparkes Fun Run proved to be another great community event attracting runners from throughout the shire and beyond to test their fitness and endurance in what has become the shire’s friendly sporting event.

The event was run under ideal weather conditions and for the not too serious runners proved an ideal outing to walk or jog whilst at the same time taking in the countryside in it’s autumn splendor.
A total of 282 competitors took part - 58 fewer than last year.
However. considering this year’s fun run took place the day after the massive Northparkes Mines Open Day the event was rated a big winner by organisers and competitors alike.
Runners came from many areas of the state including Bankstown, Orange, Canberra, Dubbo and the Macquarie Hunter region.
Parkes Rotary spokesperson Charlie Pecenka said a wonderful atmosphere had prevailed throughout the day.
“Personally I had a good reason not to run as I was part of the team responsible for cooking the breakfast and lunch which was greatly appreciated by all competitors,” Charlie said.
Canberra runner Stuart Doyle took out this years Byrne Clothing and Maxitool Mining sponsored 10-kilometre event in a time of 36:50:43 from Martin Timms and Ben Cattle.
First female to finish was Louise Sharp in a time of 40:25:58.
The Mixed Greater Building Society 5km event was taken out by Connor Whiteley in a time of 17:59:75 from Jack Daintith of Orange and Kaitlyn Klein of Macquarie Hunter.
Former Olympic Finalist Youcef Abdi also ran a leisurely fourth in the event and later presented medals to the winners.
Praneesh Chand of the Bankstown Athletics Club triumphed in the Bartley’s Barkers sponsored 2000 meter run in a time of 7:18:05. Second was Logan Whiteley and Jai Reves from Dubbo.
Emilee Curran was the first female to cross the line in a time of 8:19:63.
With this year’s event now done and run, preparations are underway to make next year’s fourth annual Fun Run bigger and better.
