We had a fantastic day on Sunday for National Tree Day!

I would like to say the weather was perfect, but perfect weather for us now would be raining, so we will just go with fantastic.

Our site at Akuna Road continues the planting projects work that have been undertaken in the Akuna Road area on land adjacent to the Sewage Treatment Plant.

A group of 75 people planted 300 trees in the space, continuing the planting of corridors that contain local species indicative of a Fuzzy Box community.

It was fantastic to see such a wonderful group turn out on the day. 75 people is a record for attendance, but that is not our focus.

Our focus is working together as a community and increasing habitat and connectivity for local fauna.

"We have had some of our community attending for many years, but are always excited to see new faces" said Central West Lachlan Landcare Chairperson, Ben Kerin.

Trees were provided by Parkes Shire Council and follow up maintenance and establishment watering will be undertaken by Parkes Shire Council.

"We aim to plant well and mulch well when they are established to minimise follow up watering.

We can see how well this worked with last year's planting which is located diagonally across from the 2019 planting" said Landcare Coordinator, Marg Applebee.

Central West Lachlan Landcare were once again pleased to be working in Partnership with Parkes Shire Council, with the support of Toyota, who supplied shirts and gloves for the day.

National Tree Day started in 1996 and is now Australia's largest community tree-planting and nature care event.

It was co-founded by Planet Ark and Olivia Newton-John.

New research has found that 70 per cent of Australians believe individual actions can have an impact on global environmental issues like climate change.

Time spent in green outdoor spaces can lower the risk of heart disease and diabetes....and just makes you feel good!
