Thursday, July 5 has become Parkes’ hottest July day in 20 years, according to the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM).
The BOM recorded Thursday reaching a maximum temperature of 22.1 degrees, 3.2 degrees above the July monthly average for the highest daily temperature in Parkes.
It’s also become the highest temperature this month so far.
The previous hottest temperature record for a July day was set on July 23, 2003 when the mercury peaked at 21 degrees.
Last July’s highest temperature was 18.6 on July 29.
Within five days, Parkes had gone from a minimum temperature of minus 2.2 degrees on Sunday morning – the lowest this month so far – to 22.1 on Thursday.
But residents were slowly eased into the high temperatures, with Tuesday coming in at a top of 18.1 degrees and Wednesday at a top of 19.8 degrees.
June this year in Parkes also had some high temperatures for the start of winter.
The BOM recorded June’s highest daily temperature was 20.7 degrees on June 7.
This figure was also above the monthly average for the highest daily temperature in June (19.9 degrees) by 0.8 of a degree.
The hottest day ever recorded in Parkes for June day was June 8, 2005 when the mercury rose to 23 degrees.
For rainfall, the BOM recorded at its weather station at the Parkes Airport that the town Parkes received 28mm in total for the month of June, with June 17 seeing the most within 24 hours with 7.2mm.
So far Parkes has only had 0.2mm of rain this month.
