After a stirring rendition of La Marseillaise and the raising of the French flag, a moving tribute was delivered by Parkes deputy mayor, Barbara Newton.
“Beth’s book is indeed a great achievement,” Barbara said.
“When I received my copy, time was tight so I thought I’d pick out parts and get a general feeling…well that didn’t happen. I realised that I didn’t want to skim.
“I was able to get to know the people of this very dear little town. These are real people in Remember Oradour. They could not be scanned over.
“Beth has let us see into their lives in a momentous period of the world, giving her readers a better understanding of humanity in times of upheaval by bringing to life the beauty and love of ordinary, innocent people.”
Two scenes from the book were brilliantly acted on stage by Beth’s troupe of thespians, John and Jenny Short, Glen Ford, Jeff and Jessica Taylor and Jacob Batt.
Lizzie Matthews sang three moving French songs and Bill Thomas emceed the proceedings.
In her own speech Beth declared: “This book may make you cry.”
“I can’t apologise for that. I have told a story that happened. A story that I felt needed to be told.
“And I hope that when you read this book it will make you realise what a privilege it is to wake up in the morning, to love, and to enjoy life in a country at peace.”
While the crowds lined up for signed copies from the author, Beth’s efficient team of caterers ensured that the mingling crowd enjoyed the food platters whilst the complimentary wine and punch flowed.
Peter Thomas of Bourke said it was an amazing experience to attend the launch of Remember Oradour
“It was so much more than I expected it to be,” he said.
“If you read one book this year, read Remember Oradour.”
