Lachlan Area Command Police are urging people to take extra care to secure their houses and property over the upcoming Easter long weekend and school holidays.

Senior Constable Daniel Greef, Crime Prevention Officer, Lachlan Local Area Command, said everyone can take simple precautions to help reduce property crime.
“Break-ins have an enormous emotional and financial impact.
“A few security measures could prevent the need to replace stolen goods, negotiate with insurers, repair damage and improve security – all of which can be very costly and emotionally draining,” Senior Constable Greef said.
Police advise people leaving their homes for a long period of time to take precautions such as cancelling newspapers, redirecting mail and asking a friend or neighbour to regularly check on their property.
“Thieves usually look for cash and property that is easy to carry and sell, such as jewellery, electrical goods, cameras, laptops, mobile phones, sunglasses, power tools, CDs and computer equipment.
“Garden sheds are also popular targets for thieves, as they are often unlocked and full of power tools or other valuable items.”
Senior Constable Greef said police can help keep the community safe, but need public co-operation.
The following precautions can help prevent crime, especially while you are on holidays:
* Ensure the house is securely locked, including windows usually left open
* Cancel newspaper deliveries and redirect your mail or have it collected by a friend
* Put pets into a boarding kennel or have friends visit them often
* Tell neighbours or friends who can check on the house, you are away and who will be at the house legitimately - eg gardeners, pet minders
* Secure your garage or, if unable move items such as bikes inside the house
* Consider security devices, including light timers etc
* Do not leave cash in the house and keep jewellery in a safe place
* Ensure your lawn is cut, the property is tidy and stop all deliveries
* Avoid leaving the answering machine on and turn the phone volume down
* Never leave a spare key outside your home, no matter how well hidden you think it is
* Do not attach your name and address to your keys
* If you lose your keys, or they are stolen, change the locks on your home or have them re keyed
“Look out for your neighbours, and be extra aware of what is happening in your area,” Senior Constable Greef said.
