Cowra saleyard reaches record

A blazing hot lamb market has pushed Cowra’s saleyard to a historic record, close on the heels, or hooves, of a national sheep sale record.

Prices soared above the $400 mark on Wednesday, 9 July for second-cross lambs, with JJ Dresser and Co’s newest qualified stock agent, Will Cain, taking top honours for the record price.

The 22-year-old credited the honour to producers, bringing in quality animals that draw in buyers from across the region.

“We get the privilege of standing over the stock and auctioning them off, but it’s the producers that should be proud of the article that they're bringing in,” he said.

“We just have the pleasure of selling them at the end of the day.”

The pen of second-cross lambs were sold for $420.20 to Southern Meats, a processor in Goulburn, from the Meiklejohn Partnership, Cowra.

Mr Cain said it was easy to see why the pen earned top dollar, with relationships key to bringing the best animals to sale.

“Whether it's over the hook or in the market, in the saleyards, our job is to find the best money for the stock, and have the best relationships to provide that,” he said.

“At the end of the day, it's our pleasure to find the right market for the right article of stock.

Mr Cain’s top tip for aspiring stock agents, or those looking to get into the industry is to draw on the collective wisdom of Cowra’s award-winning auctioneers and agents.
