Celebrating five decades of rugby

The Canowindra Pythons have had a massive weekend celebrating 50 years of rugby union in Canowindra.

Following a charity auction of the Old Boys squad jerseys on Friday, 11 July which raised $22,000 for the Country Education Foundation (CEF), the Pythons hosted a big day of rugby on Saturday, 12 July.

The Canowindra Old Boys kicked off the senior games, taking on the Riverview Old Boys team, which also had a healthy complement of local players helping out with numbers.

Canowindra Pythons' Oliver Groves said the Old Boys game was enjoyed by both spectators and players alike.

Canowindra started the day off with the win against the Riverview Old Boys team, and the feature was followed by the women's match between Molong and CSU Bathurst.

The Canowindra first grade squad took on an in-form Molong for the final match of the day, with the visitors claiming a 55-7 win over Canowindra.

Groves said Molong are a pretty hot team and proved too strong on the day, though it would have been good to get the win for the fans on the occasion.

There was no stopping the celebrations that went into the evening.

Three hundred people gathered at the Canowindra Services Club following all of the action on the field for the celebration dinner.

Groves said the dinner was enjoyed by everyone and it was a really good night to be part of.

The celebration dinner also saw a charity auction of a signed 2025 Waratah's jersey which raised $3000 for the Emus Foundation, and an auction of a trip to see the Wallabies play Argentina in September in Sydney which raised funds to support the club.

Groves said he would like to say thank you to everyone who came down to support the Canowindra Pythons at the oval and the celebration dinner and they hope to see everyone come back for their next home game this weekend.
