It was a day to remember for Cowra Soccer Club as the Women’s, Senior Men’s, and Youth Men’s sides all secured their spots in the grand final, capping off what President Drew Willis called the club’s “best day of soccer this year.”
“As president of the club it was a nerve-wracking day all round,” Willis said.
“After seeing the Women’s successful but hard-earned 3–0 result, getting the late extra time result in C Grade 1–0 and a showdown you picture seeing in a packed stadium in the B Grade penalty shootout with our boys coming out victors 4–2, it turned into our best day of soccer this year and a great note to host our final home game of 2025.”
The women’s team set the tone with their composed 3–0 victory over Waratahs White in the major semi-final, while the Youth Men edged Blayney 1–0 after extra time in what coach and president Drew Willis described as their toughest match yet.
The Senior Men then delivered a nerve-shredding finish, holding Waratahs to a 1–1 draw through extra time before triumphing 4–2 in penalties.
For Willis as club president, seeing all three grades book a place in the grand final on the same day was a landmark moment for the club and its community of supporters.
Willis was quick to highlight the many people who made the day possible, from volunteers to sponsors.
“Need to give a shoutout to our team organisers, committee members, referees and playing group,” he said.
“Without these dedicated individuals we would not have a soccer club and without referees we would not be able to host home games.”
He also acknowledged the efforts of those who went above and beyond to help Cowra host the major semi-finals at home.
“A special mention for the ODFRA Referee Michael Lewis who made it possible for us to host the Major Semi Finals at home and all our local referees who stepped up to the plate,” Willis said.
The day also showcased the strength of Cowra’s community spirit, with businesses and fellow clubs pitching in.
Willis noted the contribution of Coles Cowra for their assistance with BBQ supplies and Matt Pullen of Balance Accountants, who donated his time to cook the BBQ.
He also thanked Cowra and District Junior Soccer Club for lending extra equipment, BBQ supplies, and ongoing help throughout the season with field setup.
“Thank you all,” Willis said.
Attention now turns to the grand final, set for Saturday, September 20 in Orange.
With all three grades competing, it promises to be a massive day for the club and its supporters.
“Onto the big day, Grand Final, 20th September, Orange, other match details to be confirmed so stay tuned,” Willis said.
For Cowra Soccer Club, last Saturday will be remembered as a day when every team stood tall, and the entire community came together to celebrate success both on and off the pitch.
The teams will now prepare for their next match, with a weekend for rest and recovery in sights before the big day.
