Trained in Parkes by Kasey Orr, and owned by her husband Brendan, the ten-year-old gelding got Saturday's meeting at the Parkes Harness Racing Club off to the perfect start for the punters, winning the Parkes Leagues Club Pace.
With veteran Parkes reinsman Stephen Dowton in the gig, the Abercrombie Dexter x To Live For gelding showed good gate speed to take the lead from Barrier 3, and from there on in Dowton ensured no other runner stood a chance.
The wily veteran sat a length clear on Double Standards ($3.30 for the entire 2040 metre race, and finished with some smart quarters (29.8, 29.5) to eventually win by 3.8 metres over Dinosaurus Rex ($8.50) in 2:00.9, with pre-race favourite Whiskiesonthebeach ($2.70) a further head back in third.
Orr was proud of punch of her gelding, who just keeps on keeping on.
"He's just a really sound and happy horse even for his age," she said.
"He's just a professional, just goes around and nothing worries him, and he still loves racing and tries hard.
"I'll keep going until he tells me he doesn't want to do it anymore," said Orr.
It was a peach of a drive by Dowton to nab Double Standard's first win since August 25.
The previous five starts read 8 - 3 - 6 - 4 - 7, a little worrisome for punters pre-race, but Orr said the form line was very deceiving for a horse that has been performing well in much stronger company across Parkes, Bathurst and Dubbo of late.
"That drive was spot-on," she said.
"I'm rapt with the mile rate for that distance, and the track is in great order - as usual.
"It's probably the weakest race he's come up against in some time.
"He's used to racing against really strong horses which makes his short form look really bad, but he has always been around the mark - especially when he ran a good third here in Parkes last start.
"With the draws, and being in that grade, sometimes it just doesn't work out for him," said Orr.
