For those that don't know me, I was born and educated in Parkes, and studied at Mitchell College (now CSU) of Advanced Education, where I did accounting - and my family arrived in the area around 1873.

In 1980, I emigrated to the Northern Territory and spent 34 years, mainly in Kakadu as the CEO of an Aboriginal investment company which built the Crocodile and Yellow Waters Hotels, before I later started my own businesses in Jabiru.
I served on various boards in Kakadu and the Jabiru Town Council before returning to Parkes in 2016, where I became interested in the affairs of council.
I returned to Parkes in 2016 and became very interested in the affairs of the Parkes Shire Council.
Many people were, and still are, unhappy with the administration of the council, which led to the formation of the Parkes Shire Renters and Ratepayers Group: with myself and Steve Mitchell as convenors.
My aims, should I be elected
- Clear, transparent administration of council
- Information on council's financial dealings to be made available to public
- Improve customer service areas in council
- Fair and equal distribution of funds to cover ALL the areas of the shire
- Take advice from rate payers and renters - especially through the Parkes Renters and Ratepayers Association
- Scrutiny of employment and staff levels
The current council has done some good work, we own our wastewater supply, and they do a marvellous job of maintaining all the ovals around town.

I would, however, like to see more attention paid to our outlying towns - of course Parkes will have the lions share of the attention given the population but it shouldn't discourage those small towns from getting things done.
At the end of the day, councils don't run us - we run them - and that's why I hope on December 4 you'll Vote 1, John Coulston.
