There's no better sound in summer than the delicious reverberation around a cricket oval of leather smacking onto willow, and thank goodness it is almost that time again.

Both the junior and senior competitions are expected to start in November 6, with registrations still being taken for interested players.
Nicole Rosser, one half of the husband-wife Parkes District Junior Cricket Association (PDJCA) power couple with president Cameron, said preparations are in full swing for the season.
"Get your registrations in as soon as possible, so people behind the scenes can get preparing for the season," she said.
"The proposed date is November 6, which means we are only two weeks behind the usual start date.
"It is looking like we will get the same amount of teams too, which is fantastic."
There were 112 registered players in the junior competition last season, and with kids everywhere itching to get out and about, it is hopefully that number will be topped - or at least reached.
It's not just the older kids who should be excited either, the Woolworths Cricket Blast is set to return from November 1 from 4-5pm at Woodward Oval.
Woolworths Cricket Blast is a six week program designed to get boys and girls aged five to seven involved and excited about cricket by learning the basics, having fun and getting active.
Those interesting in coaching are also in luck, with the Community Coaching course (previously known as the Level 1 course) being held in Parkes on October 28.
Participants complete modules by themselves in the Cricket Australia Coaching app, before attending a face-to-face session to learn more.
Registration information can be found at the PDJCA Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/Parkes-District-Junior-Cricket-205743206161964.

In the local B-grade compeition, the Reedy Creek Raptors, Honey Badgers, Coachmen Cowboys and Northparkes Cricket Club will be vying for the title.
The Western Zone representative schedule is also taking shape, though the men's Country Championships, in which Western Zone has a proud record in the past decade, has been pushed later in the season due to uncertainty around the Australian Country Championships.
The national tournament is usually held in early January but a decision on whether or not it can be played later in 2022 will be made in December.
All players will need to adhere to the relevant COVID-safe protocols, which will include signing into the QR codes when utilising the nets at Woodward Oval.
So dust off the kit bags, cricketers - it's time to get rid of those cobwebs!
