To help cheer ourselves in this time of worry, we decided to have "Christmas in July" theme at this month's Parkes Day VIEW Club meeting.
It did help, too! It also helped that we had a guest speaker with a positive outlook.
Parkes may be a small town, but has many resources and many very helpful people that can make our lives easier to cope with life's problems.
Our VIEW Club searches for guest speakers that are in these categories, and tries to 'spread the word,' so to speak.
The July Meeting had one person, Lyn Townsend, who was able to explain the many resources available to you and me that are based at Neighbourhood Central, located at 80 - 82 Currajong Street, Parkes.
There are so many services available that Lynn was unable to give us details of every one of them. One of the most used, I am sure, is the community transport.
I am one of the townsfolk that use this service at least 4 times a year for medical appointments, and can say that it is truly a great assistance.
WHAT ELSE IS MAKING NEWS:
A quote from the info pamphlet says: "Volunteers are not paid; not because they are worthless...but because they are priceless." The volunteers that are referred to are the drivers, and if needed, support volunteers.
Another service that is available, and very, very helpful, is the home modification and maintenance service. I have used this service too. I needed to have a rail put in my shower, and some modifications to my lounge chairs. I found that the workers were very skilful and supportive. Everything was explained as to what and how it was to happen.
At the Meeting, we had numerous pamphlets of each service that explained every one of them in detail.
Lynn was certainly obliging in answering our questions. If you need to contact Neighbourhood Central for any of the above, or other questions, their number is 1300 810 771.
