Around 180 students from 11 schools across the state got the chance to learn about the whole pork industry, including the life cycles of pigs from artificial insemination through to pork marketing.
The education day gave the students a chance to perform ultrasounds on pigs, learn to wash and prepare pigs for show as well as parade them. They even learned about the judging of pigs at show.
There were presentations from groups like Australian Pork Ltd who handle the production and the marketing of pork, as well as presentations from the DPI, Local Land Services and a demonstration from local butchers Grant Hilliard and Jade Sciberras.
The education day was followed by a successful stud pig sale at Bedgerabong on the Thursday.
The stud pig sale conducted by VC Reid had a total clearance of 58 stud pigs.
VC Reid agent Murray Reid said the sale was quite successful and they were quite happy with the prices reached.
Mr Reid said although the prices were pretty much on average with the current market, two Large White Boars reached tops of $2000 each.
Joined gilts sold from $1250 to $1450. Unjoined Large White Gilts made from $700 to $1000.
Unjoined Landrace gilts made from $650 to $850. Hampshire Gilts made from $800 to $850. Duroc Gilts made $650 and Berkshire gilts made $800.
In the boar department Large White boars made from $1100 to $2000, Landrace boars made from $1150 to to $1200 and Duroc boars made from $600 to $1000. The single Berkshire boar made $550.
Mr Reid said that while numbers have been low at regular pig sales due to previous drought conditions, they are starting to build back up again with around 380 pigs yarded at last fortnight's sale.
The next regular pig sale at the Central West Livestock Exchange will be this Friday, May 21.
