The Parkes Picnic Races committee is just as excited as residents for this year's event on the June long weekend, after missing out on hosting the races last year because of the coronavirus pandemic.
"The picnic meeting has a history of more than 100 years and people love coming here," Parkes Picnic Races secretary Mark Olson said.
"We normally get 3000 to 4000 people - I don't know how many people we will get this year after missing last year, but the crowd is back to being unlimited now, so it should be a good day."
While it won't be a complete return to normality for the club, Olson said it was near enough to good, ahead of a big two months of racing for Parkes.
"We will have fashions, the pubs each have their own tent sites, and they get their own people in to feed and they look after them. It's a great day.
"We have the usual stuff - there are bookmakers, full bar facilities on course, catering by the Que Club, coffee and all of that."
The picnic races has long been considered a 'Back to Parkes' weekend, with many residents opening their homes to friends and relations who come to celebrate their connection with the town for the weekend.
It attracts visitors from all over the state, as well as from interstate, and it will be another good day's racing for the club, with their main meeting headlined by the Coradgery Cup, sponsored by the Parkes Services Club.
It's time to start planning for the major event on the Parkes social calendar, the Parkes Picnic Races on June 12.
Fashions on the Field is the highlight of the day, offering an array of prizes and prestige to the glamorous colts and fillies.
The categories this year include:
- Best Dressed Couple
- Elegant Lady
- Stylish Man
- Millinery
The spectator area is in great condition and the venue is now one of the best in the Central West.
The renovated grandstand and covered bookies rink complete the excellent facilities for punters and a relaxed environment offers something for everyone.
Race sponsors include Parkes Services Club, Broadway Hotel, Agricentre, Telescope Tyres and Powertools Plus.
Gates will open at 11.30am and entry is $20. For tent sites, call 0428 623 645.
