CHOOSING the wheels you want to "lap the map" will depend on budget and use, according to caravan industry expert Keelan Howard.

"Motorhomes and larger caravans are both popular with the 50 plus market," Keelan, marketing and communications manager of the Caravan Industry Association of Australia, said.

His number one tip for potential travellers wanting to buy a caravan or motorhome is to do your research.

"You need to find a product that matches your intended use, e.g., on-road or off-road, sleeping arrangements etc.," Keelan said.

"Consider whether you needa new tow vehicle, or is your current vehicle suitable to tow, ensuring it is legal and safe.

"Also, go to a reputable dealer or manufacturer. As with purchasing a car, visit a number of providers, ask the questions, explain your needs and then take the time to compare and explore what is best for you."

Both motorhomes and caravans are popular with travellers aged 50 plus.

For the older cohort of travellers with higher disposable income and the time to travel for extended periods on the road, owning your motorhome is prudent.

"Motorhomes provide fantastic basic and luxury features such as expandable walls to create larger living spaces, kitchen with a dining area, toilet, shower, large TV and double bed," Keelan said.

Also, a motorhome is driven and not towed, which for some is an attractive benefit.
