It is that time of year again for the annual competition, hosted by NetWaste and Parkes Shire Council, and with the cancellation of the 2020 event because of the coronavirus pandemic, 2021 will carry on as the year of Aluminium and Steel Cans.
The exhibition and competition aims is to challenge perceptions about 'rubbish' and to showcase creative works from reused and recycled waste materials.
Waste 2 Art provides an innovative approach to waste education, invites schools and community groups to take up the challenge and creates a new life for materials that would otherwise have been thrown away.
"This exhibition and competition gives aspiring and professional artists the chance to explore and share their waste reduction messages while showcasing their artistic ability," Cultural, Education and Library Services Manager Kerryn Jones said.
"The 2021 theme is Aluminium and Steel Cans, but entries created using any type of material normally considered waste are welcomed."
There are five categories: Primary School, Secondary School, Community (no professional artists), Open (this section is open to anyone from the community as well as professional artists), and Building or Element of Building/Large Sculpture (see details on entry form).
In each category there are three sections:
- Two dimensional works - poster/painting/collage/drawing.
- Three dimensional works - sculpture/installation.
- Functional - furniture/craftworks/wearable objects made from recycled materials.
The Waste 2 Art Community Competition and Exhibition is open to all community members, artists and schools who currently reside in the NetWaste region.
All entries need to be delivered to the Parkes Library by May 7.
Competition entries will be on display in the Coventry Room within the Parkes Library and Cultural Centre from May 18 until June 11.
The Outback Arts Gallery in Coonamble will be hosting the regional exhibition in July, featuring the winners from the local competitions in the NetWaste region.
Entries are now open - to enter, head to www.visitparkes.com.au or call into council's administration office to pick up an entry form in person.
Entries close Friday, April 30.
