Ms Hando, a mother of two, was killed on Monday, December 28.
After seeing the stress the funeral costs were placing on her family, Kim Sherrett, who is like a sister to Ms Hando, created a GoFundMe page.
"She said 'I know she would want a good send off, I'll be paying it off for the rest of my life'," Ms Sherrett said.
"Donna had her partner pass from cancer in December two years ago she used all her savings during the period of looking after him and to cover his funeral so she really had nothing behind her to cover this unexpected expense."
But as Ms Sherrett had hoped, the community came together.
Since the GoFundMe page started, more than $19,400 has been raised. Initially Ms Sherrett set a goal of $5,000 to cover the funeral costs.
Ms Sherrett said while she was surprised at how generous the Peak Hill and surrounding communities had been, at the same time it was not unexpected.
She said the Peak Hill community always came together in times like this.
All the money raised through the page will go to Ms Hando's mum, partner Clint and sons Archer and Beau to cover the funeral and any expenses they have in the future.
Ms Sherrett said the loving mum was the kind of person who would ensure everything was done for her boys.
"Her home town, red dust and her Aboriginal culture was something she loved and was very proud of.
"Shani saw the world in a way not many of us could, she was so in tune with the land and nature, many admired her open minded attitude and the optimism she had," Ms Sherrett said.
"She was the most genuine, kind hearted, loving, loud and funny person you could be blessed to have crossed paths with."
"The family is doing what they do best, coming together to support each other especially Donna, Clint, [her brother] Torin and the boys," Ms Sherrett said.
