The seventh year of the locally-grown charity event was planned to head south to Echuca, however once Victoria became a no-go a new route was plotted.

In sticking with the Late Mail formula - starting at a local village and heading to Mudgee via a significant detour - the 2020 ride will begin in Hargraves, head west to Parkes and Condobolin, north through Cobar and Bourke to Lightning Ridge, then back via Coonabarabran to Mudgee.

And while this keeps the event within NSW and they'll have COVID-safe measures, organiser Jason Turner said they've been extra conscientious about the stops including discussions with the locals to ensure the ride will be welcome in their towns.

"We've re-mapped and chose to go out through Bourke and Cobar. And as we went we spoke to the people there to make sure they're okay with us coming through," he said.

"So we're hoping to go on the ride if everything stays as it is in NSW. And as we go we'll be working within the COVID rules for social distancing and numbers.

"We've got plans in place for masks and we've got the charity's emblem on the masks for everyone. Every year we give the riders a gimmicky thing with the charity's name on it as a keepsake and this year we thought we should show that our intent is to do everything right and follow the protocols."

Once again the Late Mail is a fundraiser for Wings4Kidz, which provides free transport to medical treatment for children from regional areas.

Over the last six years the event has raised approximately $800,000. And Jason said that they're pushing on with plans not only to maintain that momentum, but also because 100 per cent of what is raised goes to the flight service.

"The charity relies on donations, it's not government funded, so we need to go out and raise money for them," he said.

So far over $60,000 has been raised for the 2020 ride - an impressive feat considering that they couldn't hold their annual golf day, which is one of the big contributors. With the riders and regular supporters doing what they can to help make up the shortfall.
