With the Federal Member for Riverina Michael McCormack's visit to the town on Thursday evening, came news of the funding from the Australian and NSW Liberal and Nationals Governments.

The Federal Government has committed $191 million to build on the NSW Government's Fixing Local Roads program, with $3,541,120 being injected into Parkes.

The specific funding and locations it will benefit follow the initial announcement Mr McCormack made on July 1 of $6.5 million that has been put aside for Parkes and Forbes combined.

Parkes Shire Council has been successful in securing the funding for East and Woodward streets and railway crossing rehabilitation works which amount to $2,241,120.

The project includes a new bridge/culvert structure, formalising drainage channel to improve flow conditions, widening the narrow pavement to be consistent with pavement widths on the northern section and pavement rehabilitation.

The four water mains and sewer main affected by the culvert widening will also be relocated.

The existing culvert in East Street near PAC Park and its waterway is a hot spot for flooding during heavy downpours.

Up to $1.3 million has been allocated to upgrade and seal Cookamidgera Road.

This project will involve sealing about 1.3km of an existing unsealed road to a width of 9 metres, with a minimum 8 metre seal.

The work is expected to improve safety on bends and crest reconstruction.

It also includes a concrete causeway reconstruction through a high-volume waterway, mitigating the damage caused by flooding.

Parkes Shire Council Mayor, Cr Ken Keith OAM welcomed the news.

"I applaud the State and Federal Government in prioritising this funding for local road projects," he said.

"These particular projects have been high on the community's list of priorities and will go a long way to improving the safety and transport connections for all road users."

Riverina MP, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Mr McCormack said he knew "regional and rural residents rely on roads much more than our city counterparts which is why I took our fight to the Cabinet table to deliver for residents in the Parkes Shire".

The funding for Parkes forms part of the first round of the government's commitment of 258 vital regional projects across 83 regional councils.

NSW Nationals Upper House MP Sam Farraway said the improvement of local roads was vital to better road safety.

"The Fixing Local Roads Program is a helping hand to Local Governments from across regional NSW that will boost job opportunities and ensure regional road users get to where they need to go sooner and safer," Mr Farraway said.

"It is great to have the Federal Government join us in delivering projects like the rehabilitation of East Street, as it will make a big difference to the overall safety and experience of daily commuters and visitors in the Parkes region."
