It's perfect timing to write up a story and present one of my own vehicles.
This is my 1975 Volkswagen Kombi van which I've owned for about seven years.
For down right fun it's the favourite vehicle I've owned.
Easy to drive and it puts a smile on peoples faces - young and old.
For reliability, it's probably the worst vehicle I've owned.
I've given up counting how many times it's been towed home, but that's part of owning an old car (especially a Volkswagen).
Funnily enough, it was getting towed in the Kombi that got me hooked in the first place.
We were shifting cars around at a friend's place and had to tow a couple of Kombi's into the shed.
The moment I climbed up behind the wheel there was something cool about it and as mad as it sounds, I still get that feeling every time I drive it.
So the story goes that I was heading to Brisbane for a TAFE course to build myself a penny farthing bike.
I needed a van to bring home so we put an engine in this one and away I went.
Three weeks driving back and forth over the mighty Gateway Bridge each day and unbeknown tome the toll fines were racking up each time.
It wasn't registered to me so the fines piled up in my mates mailbox and to add insult to injury, there was a speeding fine on its way.
Needless to say I wasn't a popular boy when I finally made it back to Parkes - penny farthing onboard and a full tank of fuel - that was the first of many trips home on a tilt tray!!
Tassie was an adventure - I think it used more oil than fuel.
It broke down in Wagga and Dubbo and closer to home in Eugowra and yes ,you're getting the picture - I'm no mechanic!!
Now with a new engine ,I'm finally getting some mileage and regaining some confidence in it.
Mine's a two seater van with enough room in back for a full sized bed.
We've used it for camping, moving furniture, loaded with garden waste and of course carting bicycles.
That's one of the things I love about the Kombi, is its versatility.
As a member of the CWCC its a great way to meet other likeminded people and enjoy some car runs with the Kombi.
With the easing of some of the COVID-19 restrictions we've resumed our monthly meetings so be sure to keep track of us on Facebook or on our webpage www.centralwestcarclub.com.
"Congratulations Dave Littlewood on picking up your new Monaro. For anyone who wants to have a look at this beautiful car and have some great coffee, it will be at Wholesome Blend cafe at 8am Saturday on show."
