The 3rd Parkes Scout Leader has been recognised with the Silver Emu Adult Recognition Award for his years of valuable service, going above and beyond what is normally expected of a person in his position.
Barry, who grew up in Parkes, joined the Scouts when he was eight-years-old and became a leader when he was 18.
He has assisted Leaders throughout the Golden West while in the roles of Regional Commissioner - Scouts, Leader in Charge for 3rd Parkes, and as a Personal Leader Advisor.
Ever humble, Barry said he is proud of his achievements in Scouts, and would not have been able to do it all without the support of family, supportive Employer's and assistance from the Parkes leaders and Parents.
"I am very proud but I don't do it for the recognition," he said.
"I enjoy just getting the kids out there. Parkes Scouts and Cubs have always been well behaved, helped each other achieve high awards like the Australian Scout Medallion, Adventurer Cords and Grey Wolf's. They've attend Golden West Region, NSW and Australian Events where, apart from enjoying themselves and learning new skills, they have also won awards like the NSW State Rally and the Golden West Region "Bunyip" competition camp."
"When we go away other Scout groups ask why our kids are so well behaved? They just are and it's the kids that keep you involved, because they enjoy doing what they are doing."
Barry led Jamboree Troops as the Jamboree Troop Leader in 2007, 2010, 2013 and 2016, and has organised the region to go to Jamborees all over Australia.
He was nominated for the award by his peers who describe him as someone who leads by example and who say the personal time and commitment he shows to Scouting is beyond compare.
"During all the years of service that Barry has provided, he has conducted himself in a humble and caring manner, whilst demonstrating leadership to both Scouts, parents and those in other Scouting positions," his award citation reads.
"He takes time to look at the bigger picture when making decisions regarding Scouts and families, ensuring that personal safety is paramount and that Scouts are gaining positive, beneficial outcomes from all undertakings. The personal time and commitment that Barry shows to Scouting is beyond compare."
