Even on those cold mornings when you just cannot get out of bed early, Parkes Sharks are in the pool by 6am and start their training, which they do up to three days a week.
We had the Individual Medley time trial night which sorted a lot of the swimmers out early by testing each of their strokes to see if they could get a personal best and with that points, which add towards monthly points winners.
Gaining personal bests are important because if you better particular times, you are eligible for Junior Excellence awards, known as JX awards.
On Friday night, the club held its first Family Fun Night where the monthly points winners and last season's JX awardees were recognised.
The family fun night was a great event with many families attending the Parkes Golf Club to enjoy a delicious evening meal in a relaxed atmosphere.
Receiving JX awards were:
Blue JX - Thomas Ball, Danilo Bottaro-Porter, Ellen Dolbel, Olivia Dolbel, Alana Folau, Quinn Kriedemann, Joel MacGregor, Chelsea McMaster, Liam Moody and Blake Price.
Bronze JX - Hayden and Mitchell Arndell, Geordie Duncan, Malakai Folau, Hunter Kriedemann, Will Lamond, Jack McMaster and Ewan Moody.
Silver JX - Finlay Quince, Georgia Rice and Meg Turner.
Point winners for the month of October were: Nicole Ellis (1st), Joan Carolan (2nd), Meg Skinner and Phoebe Forbes (joint 3rd) for the girls.
Boys winners were Khan Jackson (1st), William Ellis (2nd) Matty Price and Charlie Mahon (joint 3rd).
On Saturday morning, 45 members took to the pool for a couple of hours for a specialised training session with every swimmer rotating between different coaching sessions with all five club coaches on hand to assist in this valuable learning experience.
Amy Robinson also offered advice about nutrition during competition and warm-up exercises to get the body ready for those early morning starts.
Cowra carnival is on this weekend and a contingent of swimmers from Parkes will make the trek to Cowra on both Saturday (distance) and Sunday to compete. This carnival will be a great try-out before the Parkes Carnival in a little over two weeks' time.
The Parkes Sharks will be hosting their annual qualifying swimming carnival at the Parkes Pool on Saturday, November 30 and Sunday, December 1.
Entries close 11.30pm on November 26.
Saturday, which begins at 3pm and warm up at 2pm, will see the distance events taking place across all strokes including the Individual Medley.
Events range from 200m to the 800m and 1500m freestyle.
The swimming program will continue on Sunday at 9am (warm up at 8am), with the open 200m Individual Medley kicking off the day.
Sunday focuses on the sprinting events across a range of age groups.
This year Parkes' carnival boasts 96 events in total and will award age groups 13 years and older, and opens, cash prizes for first, second and third places.
