Bowling
On Thursday 24 bowlers turned up to play six games of pairs;
On rink one: Bob Freeman and John Watson 16 were defeated in a tight game by Colin Miller and Bruce Deland 17 Bruce and Colin got out well from the gates but were reeled back in before coming back with a four on the last to just scrape in.
On rink two: In a battle of some of our most consistent performers Ted Wright and Col Hayward played a neck and neck game against the ever consistent lead Rob Irving and Skip Tom Furey.
On the 13th end the scores were tight at 13-12 but Colin and Ted put in a more consistent performance in the end to run out 21-17 winners.
On rink three: Gordon Dickson and Guy Ellery 24 put in a dominant performance against Mal Porter and Geoff Freeman 14.
On the third end Mal and Geoff gave the other pair a big scare by scoring a seven. This stirred Guy and Gordon into action to win 12 out of the 16 remaining ends to win easily.
On rink four: Ron Hornery and Gary McPhee prevailed over John Carr and Col Mudie 28-12. Ron and Gary gave away a four on the 10th end when they were 15 shots to zero up.
But got the four back on the 16th end to run out comfortable winners.
On rink five: Les Kent and Rob Tinker put in one of the most impressive wins lately with a convincing 31 to 19 shots win against back from vacation Col Woods and the evergreen and usually consistent player, John Ward. Col and John struggled in this game and only scored on eight of the 21 ends whilst Les and Rob played very well.
On rink six: One of the most consistent and experienced leads in the club Graeme Barby and skip Warren Bevan had a 10 shot win over Martin Tighe and Steve Ryan.
Marty and Steve scored on the first two ends before entering into their own drought and not scoring again until the 6th and then the12th end. At that stage Graeme and Warren put the foot down to run out 24 to 14 winners.
On Saturday the minor pairs final was played; unfortunately rain delayed this game but Rob Irving and Steve Ryan prevailed in a marathon which finished at approximately 6.15pm by outlasting Greg Townsend and Gary McPhee in a thriller.
Both Steve and Rob played well in the early stages to have a dominant 7-0 lead before one of those rare rainfalls came down and play was delayed for an hour.
Upon re-commencement of the game Greg and Gary struggled to keep touch for a few ends with the altered green condition but began to perform and chip away when on the 18th end the scores were tied at 16 all. On the 19th and 20th Rob and Steve scored a 1 each end to go to 18-16.
On the final end Gary needed to move the jack back to Greg's back bowls to have any chance. Gary struck the jack but in the process one of Steve's bowls was also moved back to give Greg and Gary only one shot instead of the required three.
The end result was an 18-17 win to Rob and Steve on the 21st end. This win gives Steve Ryan the minor singles and minor pairs titles for 2019.
An outstanding achievement for a player who has shown plenty of talent and sportsmanship in the process. Congratulations Steve and also a great leads game by Rob in the minor pairs.
Social bowls was called off after 6 ends owing to the rain.
On Sunday a semi final of the Major Singles was played with Rob Irving, Guy Ellery and Gary McPhee up against Garry Went, Tom Casey and Mick Went. In a game where the match and shot making experience of Mick Went prevailed Gary and his team were always trailing.
In the end Mick's team run out winners 24-16. Good luck in the final fellas.
