The cheering could be heard on the other side of the Castlereagh River on Saturday when the locally owned He's Our Toy Boy won the 1200 metres Edwards Livestock Exports Mendooran Cup.
Raced by a group of rodeo enthusiasts from Mendooran, the eight year old gelding He's Our Toy Boy is trained at Tamworth by Jane Clement and was ridden to perfection by Tony Cavallo.
After enjoying a nice run close to the pace, the heavily backed He's Our Toy Boy ( $3.50 to $2 favourite ) reached th lead in the straight and scored by nearly a length from Satan Da ( Kate Cowan, $7 ) and Zoutenant ( Yvette Lewis, $4 ).
Despite the severe drought, the Mendooran meeting attracted a big crowd and a drought of a different kind was broken when Miss Sakkara won the 800 metres Class 2 Handicap.
The last race won by Miss Sakkara was at Mungery Picnics in October 2015 and since then the now eight year old mare had started 40 times with the best result being eight second placings.
Trained at Forbes by Dennis Bush for his son Nathan Bush and his daughter in law Amanda Bush, Miss Sakkara ( $6 ) with Bathurst based apprentice Ashleigh Stanley in the saddle led throughout to win by two lengths from Tango Time ( Ashley Morgan, $4.60 ) and Sophie's Choice ( Daniel Pitomac, $21 ).
While the Nyngan trainer Rodney Robb on Saturday was winning with Kaluapapa at the famous Birdsville meeting in outback Queensland he was represented at Mendooran by Relaxed ( Jake Pracey-Holmes, $9 ) which came from midfield to beat So Good To Me ( Tony Cavallo, $3.20 fav.) and Bel Attrait ( Rasit Yetimova, $7 ) in the 1500 metres JJ McGirr Silver Horseshoe Class 2 Handicap.
In a good day for Nyngan stables, the Greg O'Neill trained Kiwicod ( Tony Cavallo, $2.80 fav.) led all the way in the Maiden Plate ( 1500 metres ) to account for Blinkin Nomore ( Yvette Lewis, $7 ) and Thorn Lass ( Kate Cowan, $21 ).
She's Sizzling set the pace in the 1200 metres Maiden Handicap before the Troy O'Neile, Tamworth trained Try 'N' Sing A Song ( Daniel Northey$4 ) swept to the lead and held on to beat Kenninghall ( Ashley Morgan, $2.20 fav. ) and Apricot ( Yvette Lewis,$12 ).
Owned by David and Heather Ringland from Dubbo and trained at Coonamble by Michael Denison, Snippety Snip ( Kate Cowan,$10 ) regained form to lead all the way when defeating Fioravanti (/Daniel Northey, $13 ) and Rufio ( Ashley Morgan, $4.80 ) in the 1000 metres Benchmark 50 Handicap.
Winning rider Kate Cowan, formerly from New Zealand, is very talented and now apprenticed to Dubbo trainer Kody Nestor is forecast to have a bright future.
Collarenebri Cup meeting is on Saturday with the Dubbo TAB meeting on Sunday to feature the $100,000 Dubbo City Toyota Gold Cup and $50.000 Picnic Championship Final.
