The Rookie
Veteran's Golf
The weather won the day as only twenty-one stalwarts played at Forbes last Thursday.
The gauge may have said that it was not so cold and the sun did appear occasionally, but the wind went through you at a minus degree.
This was tempered by a warm fire and a hot sandwich after the game! The winner on the day was Alex McKinnon (Fbs) on 26 points.
Alf Davies (Fbs) came home second on the count-back from captain Peter Barnes and old faithful, Tom Edols, both from Forbes, all on 25 points. Gary Pymont won the encouragement award.
Nearest the pin winners were Roy Bell and Rod Luyt. The Mick Miller Shield points were easily won by Forbes, 149 to 121.
This week we play in slightly warmer weather at Parkes. Due to unforeseen circumstances, the Parkes Annual General Meeting has been postponed until July 11.
The Lachlan Valley 18 Holes Competition will take place at Parkes on Thursday, June 20.

Peak Hill Harness Racing
Harness Racing at Peak Hill never lets patrons down and last Sunday afternoon was no exception.
Basked in brilliant sunshine, the day produced great racing and whet the thirst of racegoers for what will be an even better race meeting next Sunday afternoon when the Carnival of Cups rolls into town.
Four qualifying heats of the Jack Honan Memorial were conducted, and the outcome will see a quality field contest next week's $10,000 Final.
But those who attended on Sunday were treated to something special when potential Dubbo star Dazzle Me led throughout to win the final event on the program, the Central West Funerals Pace (1800m).
The Barry Lew trained three-year-old was able to lead with ease and driver Mat Rue rated the New Zealand bred gelding to perfection, allowing him to stroll through the first 1000 metres before clicking it up a few notches, pacing the last mile in 55.9 seconds.
What was more impressive was that Rue had Dazzle Me under a stranglehold all the way to the line and it did appear that he had plenty left in the locker.
Placegetters, Pocket Beauty (Steve Downton) and Big Bill (Amy Rees) tried hard to stick with the winner but it was all in vain.
The win completed a winning double for Rue who had earlier took out the Jack & Josie Collison Memorial, the opening heat of the Honan Series aboard Ichiba Newy.
Rue drove a patient race, coming from a trailing position to overpower Peak Hill trained pacer, Best Beau (John Beeby) which led and fought on well.
Mo Chara (Robert Harris) snuck into third to qualify for the final.
Champion driver Amanda Turnbull was seen at her very best when she led throughout aboard Loyola Trios to win heat two, the Peter Woods and Peak Hill Agriwest Pace.
Just when the gelding appeared to be under siege on the home turn, Turnbull worked her magic and Loyola Trios found another gear to race clear for a slashing win over Smiling Sam and Pacman Hammer.
The Norman Hando Memorial was Heat Three of the series and Dinosaurus Rex came from midfield to win for trainer, driver Graham Betts, defeating Pure Charisma and Lovin Everyday.
The final heat sponsored by Alkane Resources and Clarinda Park Horses turned out to be a walk in the park for four-year-old Bobby Street and his trainer, driver Mark Hewitt.
The gelding started at Winx like odds and done it very comfortably, leading throughout to beat Joanandi and Caesars Falcon.
A ten out of ten drive from Spring Hill horseman, Kel Winnell aided Llanfair Rhiannon to take out the Ron Hoy Memorial.
Winnell sat back in the field until the 400 metre mark and brought the mare home with a well-timed run to race clear and score by almost eight metres.
Pretty in the Outback and The Crom filled the placings.
Next week's race meeting is shaping as one of the best held at Peak Hill with almost $100,000 in stakes up for grabs.
Racing
Grey filly Matter Of Factor became the fourth individual winner produced by broodmare Sippa Bubbly when taking out the opening event at Gilgandra on Saturday for Dubbo trainer Clint Lundholm.
Matter Of Factor is a half sister to Sipharderson, a winner at Dubbo on Thursday, Snippety Snip and Joey's Destiny and all four were bred and are raced by David and Heather Ringland from Dubbo.
A two year old, Matter Of Factor ( Tony Cavallo, $7.50 ) raced against older horses and it was a good performance to overhaul Gotta Minute ( Wendy Peel, $1.85 favourite ) to win by threequarters of a length with Calcitro ( Rhiannon Payne, $8 ) third in the 800 metres Kelly and Astill Lawyers Maiden Plate.
Tony Cavallo then combined again with Clint Lundholm to win the Gilgandra Toyota Maiden Handicap (1280 metres ) with So Good To Me ( $3.50 ) which finished best to account for the leader Beau Zariz ( Jake Pracey-Holmes, $3.40 fav.) and Carnegie's Monaco ( Vad Bolozhinskyi, $5 ).
Ken Dunbar who led all the way on California Fox to win a Qualifier for the Country Winter Classic at Dubbo last week was in good form again at Gilgandra with a winning double on Say Madam and Big Surprise.
From the Sonja Sharp stable at Orange, Say Madam ( $4.20 fav.) came from last in a big field to overwhelm Prince Zariz ( Daniel Pitomac, $13 ) and Whispadah ( Daniel Northey, $11 ) in the 1280 metres Royal Hotel Benchmark 58 Handicap.
Placed in a handy position by Ken Dunbar, the Gavin Groth, Gunnedah trained Big Surprise ( $3.30 fav.) arrived in time to win the Geronimo Farm Machinery BM 50 Handicap ( 800 metres ) by a half head from Three Rar ( Jeff Kehoe,$15 ) trained at Menindee by Wayne Marsden.
To the cheering of local punters, the Bruce Parker, Gilgandra trained Zamali ( Vad Bolozhinskyi, $3.20 fav.) swept past the opposition to win the Royal Hotel BM 50 Handicap (1280 metres ) from Northern Conqueror ( Tony Cavallo, $5.50 ) and Al Guns A Dancer ( Jake Pracey-Holmes, $12 ).
Other winners were the Garry Lunn, Dubbo trained Traffic Cop ( Andrew Banks, $1.90 fav.) and Ghetto Boy ( Simone Vella, $3.70 fav.) trained at Cessnock by Dean Jackson.
Racing at Wellington on Thursday followed by Parkes on Saturday and Gulgong on Sunday.
