The Recycled Water Rising Main includes approximately 12km of pipeline infrastructure that will service up to 20 sites located throughout the Parkes urban area.

Construction is on track to be completed in July, with 6.7km of purple pipes now installed.

"The Recycled Water Scheme is a responsible solution to water shortages, but the benefits are flowing even before the taps are turned on," Parkes Shire Council's Director Infrastructure Andrew Francis said.

"Any infrastructure spend has flow-on benefits to the community, and the construction stage also strengthens our local economy," he said.

Mr Francis said the town's new rising main has generated 33 jobs during construction, with 13 of these going to Parkes workers.

"Aside from construction jobs, local highly skilled professionals and contractors are engaged to oversee the project, ensuring compliance around the legislative, health, safety, technical and environmental aspects of the project," he said.

"Infrastructure projects really have a huge ripple effect on local economies.

"Parkes has been really fortunate with the level of investment and development over recent years.

"Not only have we delivered multi-award winning infrastructure for our residents, we have been able to generate significant local spend during construction."

The water and sewerage upgrades engaged 67 local businesses and suppliers at different stages and provided jobs for 329 individuals.

Mr Francis said that construction was consolidated where possible to streamline workflow and protect the budget.

"The same contractor was engaged on the state-funded Sewage Treatment Plant, Water Treatment Plant, as well as the federally-funded Advanced Water Recycling Facility," he said.

"This reduced mobilisation costs, and streamlined the workflows, creating more value for money."

Bushman Street will be closed from Albert Street to East Street between today and Thursday, February 28 for construction on the main.

Spicer Park and footpaths will also be closed to ensure pedestrian safety. 

Students who walk to school via Bushman Street will be directed to a safe pedestrian access way adjacent to the construction zone. Motorists are advised to detour via Gap Street.

School buses that travel along Bushman Street will make alternative stopping arrangements while road closures are in place.

Motorists, parents, and carers are urged to be extra vigilant when travelling to schools while road conditions are changed.

Please follow directions from traffic controllers, and refrain from driving or parking along freshly laid pipe-works as this could pose safety risks to the pipes and vehicles.
