The school hosts its own version of the Cancer Council’s Relay for Life in the school grounds to coincide with Parkes’ own biennial event, which has been moved to March next year.
The school community gathered together on October 24 for the Mini Relay, with raffles, monetary donations and the sale of fruit salad and ice cream during recess and lunch all contributing to the final amount.
Students completed about 22 laps in 30 minutes within the school grounds.
Event organiser and teacher Maureen Massey couldn’t have been more thrilled and prouder of the community’s efforts.
“It was a brilliant response from the school’s community considering the effects of the drought, etc and the fact that it did not include any fundraising which would come from the actual Parkes Relay For Life,” Maureen said.
“We’ve been doing this for a few years now and how it’s received has always been terrific. Our school would like to sincerely thank the school families who donated prizes for our raffle.”
Maureen also wanted to thank Food Service Central, Woolworths and Coles who donated items towards the sale of the fruit salad and ice cream.
“We appreciate whatever the town can give,” she said.
“Despite the postponing of the Parkes Relay for Life, our Mini Relay for Life proved extremely successful.”
Cancer Council NSW Community Relations Coordinator, Brendon Argyle, was present on the day and praised everyone involved.
“It’s great to see a school like Parkes East Public School (PEPS) getting behind the initiative, and to see so many purple Relay For Life tops from previous years on display,” he said.
“Relay really is a community event and the energy kids bring to anything is hard to beat!
“I think we have to really thank Maureen Massey and the amazing team at PEPS, the mini Relay for Life that they run here, usually, prior to the local Relay event gets the ball rolling and sets the tone for the event.
“The whole school really gets behind it and that fits so well with the theme this year of ‘team work’. Now it’s all hands on deck to get the Parkes and District Relay for Life ready to roll March 23, 2019 at Pioneer Oval.
“Many hands make light work and we have room for a few more committee members if people are interested.”
People can register their relay team by searching Parkes Relay for Life on the Cancer Council website and filling in the form, or visiting Renee Rice at Langlands Hanlon/Raine and Horne.
